Aarhus Bryghus Old Strong Ale is brewed with a small proportion of smoked malt from the museum brewery and maltings ‘Den Gamle By’ (The old town) in Aarhus.
We recommend a visit to the brewery, where a reconstruction of the brewery in a scale 1:20 is working and producing malt and beers, as they were made 200 years ago. As the sprouted barley is dried over an open fire, the malt is smoked. The Strong Ale or Stock Ale as it also was called, was used many hundreds of years ago to mix with the much weaker ales, when they went sour. Today we enjoy it on its own.

Bottle, 3.5 years after BBE date. Pours dark cola brown with medium white head. Aroma is malt, black currant, port wine, prunes, caramel and rye bread. Taste is medium sweet, light bitter and faint acidic. Body is milky with soft carbonation. Finish is long and sweet with notes of caramel, brown sugar, sweet licorice and rye.

Clear dark amber, offwhite froth. Aroma has malt, grassy, twiggy hops. Malty flavour, sweetish with some caramel. Smooth and nicely balanced, just not very exciting.

Small white head. Clear amber body with light carbonation. Smoky, intensely fruity aroma with smoky toffee notes. Sweet caramelly toffee and rye taste with delicate smoky nutty notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft, slightly flat mouthfeel. Dryish smoky faintly roasty nutty aftertaste with earthy fruity notes. A beer made with just the old malts would be fantastically interesting. As it is, this is an excellent beer. The specialty malts add a lovely touch. (0.65l bottle, from Salling, Aarhus.)

600 ml bottle. Re-rating of well matured bottle, still one year best before date. Clear deep amber body under a moderate sized off-whiter head. Nice aroma of dark malt, dry fruit and caramel with a little hint of oxidation. Flavor has a rich, sweet malt flavor with caramel, some brown sugar, dry fruit, moderate bitterness and mild, pleasant level of oxidation. Well balanced body with a long lasting, sweet malty and some warming alcohol in aftertaste. Sometimes easy to forget the classic styles and appreciate them on their own term.

Small slightly bubbly mediumlasting head. Aroma is mild, nuts, caramel, hay, dried fruits, "knekk", grass, alcohol, weeds, almonds. Taste is slightly harsh watery, caramel malts, harsh grass, minerals, alcohol, wet grain, paper, hay, weeds, nuts. Medium bitterness, harsh watery mouthfeel. Meh!

600 ml bottle, brought from Aarhus by my son Magnus, thanks! ABV is 8%. Clear amber to copper colour, moderate head, slightly off-white. Moderate aroma of malts with some caramel. The flavour is also malty with caramel, but is not too sweet (despite a considerable residual sweetness), and surprisingly easy drinking for its strength. Decent hops in the finish. One of the better beers from Aarhus Bryghus.
