BIG SMOKE is part of the Collaboration Series which is a succession of small-batch brews created by independent brewers working together to create new beers that push the boundaries of taste. This unique, strong, smoky ale was jointly brewed by James Walton (Storm Brewing) and Jack Bensley (Russell Brewing) using 10% Peat Smoked Malt and Bravo and Willamette Hops. "We used a ridiculous amount of malt in this brew" says James, "and we are very pleased with the result". Big Smoke is a malt-forward beer with a big smoke aroma and a well-balanced hop finish. Storm Brewing and Russell Brewing Company were both founded in June of 1995 and have been producing craft beer for the local urban community for 16 years. The fine ales and lagers of both breweries can be found on tap at many fine restaurants and pubs in British Columbia. We hope you enjoy our Big Smoke collaboration ale. Cheers!

2012-04-25, bottle from Toby’s, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Dark mahogany color; medium sized head. Nice smoke aroma, vague ham. Strangely it tastes of soy sauce and Japanese brown seasonings; dark malt and chocolate, with moderate sweetness, and good body strength, and a peaty trace along with the common smoke, also traces of smoked ham; sweet caramel, more in the final; correct bitterness. A bit rough but good.

2012-01-09, bottle from Viti, Vancouver, 7-4-7-4-15=37
Dark brown color, almost black, with medium sized head. Aroma of smoke, with raisin, some oxidization, and a bit of paper and dust. Full bodied, with a smooth, creamy mouthfeel; malt and dark caramel flavor, with a peat backbone, wood, and a sourish note from the smoked malt; correct bitterness.
Bold, loud, unelegant, but pleasant.

Bottled. Mads told me to rate this for my 23,100 rating. A deep red beer with a thin tan head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, smoke, and malt. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, caramel, alcohol, strawberries, and metal, leading to a dry finish. Odd - is there a fermenting error? Thanks fiulijn for sharing.

Bottle, 22oz. A more or less clear one, dark brown in color and with a small, dense, light beige head. Roasted nose with a touch of peat. Some dried fruits and hops too. The flavor is sort of sweet, yet it feels dry on the palate. Full-bodied. Roasted malts, hints of coffee and some peat in the flavor, a decent bitterness shows up towards the end. A quite pleasant one, although the flavor feels too sweet. 120218
