Indian Ink was the winning beer in this years Homebrew Competition, it is a 6.5% Black IPA, and the winning brewer Ali Kocho-Williams came to the brewery to brew it with us. ‘Indian Ink’ was a unanimous and very popular choice with the judges. ‘Indian Ink’ is a Black IPA a very unusual and contempory style of beer; black to look at, but with very fruity aromas of tropical fruits, the taste is of tropical fruits, with a hint of liquorice & roast flavours, with a moreish resinous bitterness to finish.

Bottle 500ml.Clear dark red brown colour with a large, frothy, good lacing, mostly to fully lasting, light beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, moderate to heavy hoppy, orange - citrus, grapefruit, light resin. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20120122]

Bottle from Stirchley Wines, Birmingham. Dark reddish brown pour with a thin tan head. Earthy nose, with plenty of roasted character and some fruit, chocolate and cola nut notes. Hoppage kicked into action in the taste and tangled with the roast. Slight sweetness and fairly prominent alcohol. Building bitterness towards the lengthy finish which turned more roasty then bitter again. Plenty going on here and it grew on me.

Bottle from Beers of Europe. Dark reddish-brown pour with a beige head. Blackcurrant, vanilla and coffee nose. Chocolate, raisin and dark fruit flavour. Fruity, bitter finish. Interesting.

Cask at CPK, London. Pours black with a faint head. Good roast in the nose, some raw hops. Lightly sweet flavor, roasty, more natural-tasting hops, grass and earth. Medium in body with fine carbonation. Lingering grass in the finish, more roasted malts, earth, some moderate sugar. Overall impression of heavy, raw hops, which I do enjoy.

500ml bottle. Pours a very dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is grapefruit bitterness with some cocoa and coffee. Taste has a little piney hop to start. Bitter finish with cocoa.

On cask, handpump at the Cask & Kitchen Mikkeller evening, Sat 4th June 2011 Pours very dark brown with a slim off-white head. This is full of coffee, touch of apple skin, fruity with a dryness at the end. Nice stuff once again from Bristol Beer Factory. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov14 3.6

(Cask at Cask Pub & Kitchen, Pimlico, London, 20 May 2011) Black colour with hints of ruby. Foamy beige head. Hoppy, roasted nose with notes of liquorice, coffee, grapefruit and pine needles. Roasted, malty, hoppy taste with liquorice, grapefruit and pine needles. More than medium body, with some sweetness. Generous piney bitterness in the finish. Subtle is not really the word, flavours are going in all kinds of directions, but it’s a very nice and hoppy beer.

Cask-conditioned at the Grain Barge, Bristol 25/05/2011. Near black with a tinge of red and slight, off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, pine resin and fruit cake. Sweetish flavour, with dark fruits, citrus and some caramel, leading to a dryish, slightly toasty finish. Enjoyable, if not fully integrated.

Cask at CPK on 18th May 2011. Deep red with thin grey head decaying to a micro-ring. Pungent aroma, touch of liquorice and sweet malt, wax candle. Beautiful bouquet in-mouth, burnt malt and dry grassy hop. Chicory and endive touches, herbiness abounds, and the finish is hoppy, spicy and the chicory note continues. This is a hightly satisfying beer.

Cask at Cask pub and Kitchen, Pimlico, London. A dark brown almost black coloured pour with a medium beige head on top. Hoppy, malty aroma. Tastes malty, hoppy, roasty, slight sweetness. A nicely put together black IPA. Decent stuff.
