An old style mild, strong but carefully hopped to allow the malts to flourish. Liquorice hints balance the lasting nutty finish.

Bottle from Russell & Newnes, Aldeburgh. Extremely dark, but not quite black, with a very thin head. A full-bodied mild with some porteresque style roasted malts. Has a hint of sweetness in its nose.

Bottle from Beautiful Beers. Appearance - dark brown to black and opaque. Crema head. Nose - dark chocolate and blackcurrant. A hint of smoke. Taste - more creamy chocolate and light smoke. Still a hint of dark fruits. There's a caramel thing coming in late. Palate - medium bodied. Creamy texture. Dry-ish finish. Overall - nice to have a Mild for a change. A decent example.

Creamy tan head stayed on a jet black still body. Raisin, spice & berry aroma. Medium bodied, sharp on the palate with a clean back. Malt, berry, spices, raisins & light citrus tastes with a long tangy fruity finish. Outstanding Mild

500ml bottle [Thanks to Grumbo for this award-winning Mild!]. Opaque, darkest brown colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Toasty, dark malty aroma with a nuttily touch, hints of Brazil nut, dark chocolate, liquorice, cold coffee, a touch of toffee. Taste is mildly roasty, dark malty, slightly nutty and minimally chocolately, a touch of liquorice and toffee, cautious fruity overtones with hints of raisin, lingering hop bitterness. An extensive voyage through a great many malty regions.

Bottle from The Courtyard shop, Elveden. Malts and chocolate overpowered by a gassy milky cheese waft. This was a real gusher, started by foaming out of the bottle. Dark cola brown. Bubbly beige head, once it settles there are still a few mm. A creamy sweet edged bitterness. However, like the aroma, there’s a overpowering element - a particularly bitter streak is over emphasised by the lively fizzy carbonation. To be fair this gradually reduced in intensity and things smoothed out. Medium bodied. Slick. Long finish. Would have preferred this if it hadn’t been for the carbonation overload. However once this calmed down a perfectly good mild came through.

Cask at GBBF 2016. It pours darkest brown with a small head. The aroma is toasty, woody, cacao nibs, damp leaves, sweaty and umami notes. The taste is sweet, oily, treacle, toffee, Eccles cake, dried berry and some sweet sugary notes. The finish is bitter - sweet. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Comes across a bit sugary overall. Fair.

GBBF Day 3. Dark brown color, average sized beige head. Smell and taste malts, lightly chocolate, lightly brown malts and raisins, a bit sweet initially but a nice light bitter finish. Decent body and carbonation. Not bad.
