Belgian-Style Dark Ale

A portion of this ale was aged in French oak barrels to honor the subject of the third verse. Topped with a Belgian-style dark ale, the finished blend is a bold and spicy concoction that rises above the pecking order to establish its own unique place in the 12 Days of Christmas Series.

Pulled from an original 750 ml bottle. Aroma is malt and spice forward. Quite a bit of caramel, toffee, toasted breads, nuts and raisins. Light cherry, date, fig and prune notes. Medium light pepper, coriander, clove, grains of paradise, and allspice with light anise notes. Light oak notes and alcohol spice. Some light cardboard oxidation. Pours a somewhat dark brown with lighter brown and auburn hues on the edges with a fairly large, thick, frothy, tan head that recedes steadily to a small, creamy film that lingers. Medium light lacing and fairly long legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with quite a bit of malt character. Lots of caramel and toffee with lighter toasted bread and nut notes. Hints of chocolate with light raisin, prune and date notes. Light oak notes and alcohol spice. Moderately strong spice notes of coriander, clove and allspice. Light cardboard notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer that has held up pretty well for the age. I don't love it, and probably wouldn't love it fresh because I'm not a huge fan of Belgian spiced beers. The oxidation does work well with the spice though. Edit: I just tried the new 375 and my original rating stands. I'm not a fan of the spice character and Belgian yeast notes that are prevalent in the fresher bottle.

Bottle @ Bruery Bonanza 2017. Hazy deep golden brown pour with a frothy offwhite head. Bread, pears & oxidation in the nose. Tiny sweet, slightly bitter, malty & tiny spicy taste. Round fairly dry mouth. Ok considering the age.
