Bottle @ Danish Summer Gathering, Ulfborg 2011. Dark brown almost black, nice foamy brown head that doesn’t last long. Very roasted malt aroma, caramel, vanilla, chocolate, coffee. Sweet and roasted malt taste, coffee, caramel and chocolate. A warming light alcoholic burn as you shallow makes you aware of it’s high ABv, but I would have never guessed 18% as it is very well hidden, nice one !

Bottle, 12oz, 2010 edition and 2007 edition side by side. As expected the 2010 edition has more and longer lasting head, both heads beige in color. Dark brown to black body for both. The aromas are quite similar, seemingly the cellaring hasn’t done much. Alcohol, soy, roasted malts and some coffee on the nose. Not much difference in flavor either, soy, licorice notes, roasted malts, dark sugars and alcohol. Very warming, full-bodied. An intense one, it wasn’t until now I noticed it’s supposed to be 18% ABV, displains the warmth, but if it’s this strong the alcohol is well hidden. Interesting. 110820

sampled at last summer’s Michigan Brewer’s Fest - This one was listed at 19% at the festival. It pours black and smells of dark roast malt, alcohol, and chocolate. The flavor is of really intense malt with chocolate, licorice, and alcohol. It’s full bodied, rather harsh, and very warming thanks to that huge alcohol content. It’s extremely good now and I suspect will be better when some age tones down the harshness of the high alcohol content.
