Coffee complements the dark malts and strangely mellows the flavours to provide a smooth drinking stout which smells as good as it tastes.

Cask at Pow, Farnborough. Creamy coffee aroma - almost reminiscent of a liquer. Dark and glossy cola brown. The tan head form a thin ring before leaving a few lonely bubbles. Initially very low key almost non-existent bitterness. A sour edged coffee berry taste then comes through in the undertow. Some creaminess. Thick bodied. Creamy. Flat carbonation. Like the taste, the finish is long and astringent but low key. Really quite bland. If it didn't contain coffee it feels like it would lack al flavour. Poor effort after the inviting aroma and despite the fulsome mouthfeel.

Cask at the Hope Tap, Reading. Mahogany-black with a thin beige head and a light sparkle. Chocolatey throughout, with sweet coffee cream chocolates deepening into bittersweet espresso. As with all of Bingham's stouts, it's very full-bodied for the abv. There's a good roasty background with a pleasant wisp of smoke too. It's maybe not quite as good as the vanilla variant, but it's still a lovely drink. Mmmm... I love this series of stouts.

Cask gravity at Planet Thanet BF 2014. Black beer no head. Coffee chocolate aroma but somewhere between an instant and ground coffee. Coffee is no more than ok. Overall the chocolate is the best thing about the beer. Still mostly average

50cl bottle from the brewery. A deep magohany colour with a beige head and a brilliant amber glow when caught by the light; the aroma has soft malts, and the expected ground coffee; in the mouth there’s some tart fruit at first that balances well against the creamy coffee body; before a rich coffee finish. Slightly thin, but otherwise an excellent coffee stout.

Cask at the Sussex Arms, Twickenham Green - 29/12/12. Very dark mahogony brown, light black in the light, thin off white head that recedes to the edge. Nose is a great coffee hit, roast malt, sugars, sweet espresso coffee. Taste follows, coffee forward with a touch of dark chocolate and liqourice with a roast malt backbone. Medium bodied with soft carbonation, roast finish. A very good cask coffee stout!

Bottle from Jacks, Westholme Stores Goring-on-Thames, consumed at home Sunday 29th July 2012 Pours very dark brown with a light beige head. Light coffee notes on the nose. Soft in mouth with a dark fruit edge, slight fruity sourness though I would stress that this appears to be intentional, it adds a nice tangy contrast to the coffeeness. Tasty coffee stout that is just perhaps a bit thin. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3
