Honey sweet mead infused with a secret blend of herbs and spices to a 16th century recipe.
Beloved of Queen Elizabeth I, Metheglin is a sweet honey mead infused with a complex blend of herbs and spices.
Metheglin is derived from the Welsh word meddyglyn, meaning “medicinal liquor”, as healing herbs were often stored as metheglin so they would be available over winter.
The aroma of Lurgashall Metheglin is enormous. The herbal and spicy character, in particular the resiny character of thyme & rosemary, are fully evident on the palate as well. Clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg intermingle with the sweet honey flavor. Its big body, underscored by about 13.5% alc./vol., ends in a sweet-spicy-slighly tart /dry finish. Intriguing and mysterious.

(Bottle 75 cl) Courtesy of Hildigöltur. Clear, pale golden - no head. Spicy nose with distinct honey notes. Full-bodied with soft and very sweet honey accents - touches of coconut and almonds. Nice. 280907

From 75 cL bottle, thanks to Hildigöltur. Pours golden yellow with lacing white head. Aroma is apple, clean, fruity. Almond like aroma. Flavour too is sweet almondy and sweet, slight burning alcohol mouthfeel. Ends slight burning with a slight alcohol finish and an almond and apple flavour to finish.6-4-7-4-13=3.3
From bottle at Sunset Grill. Pours clear and golden yellow with no head. Aroma is dry, chemical and honey herbal. Sweet, honey to pollen, slight floral too. Herbal, spiced and rather sweet finish.7-3-7-3-13=3.3

Honey aroma. Light spices with sweet honey. Some nutmeg, fruit, a little cinnamon, my 2nd favorite from Lurgashall.

Bottle at Sunset Grill on 8/5/06, unsure of the age.
Medium-tinted golden mead with some hay-colored tints and some pencil-yellow tones as well. Clear, filtered, leaves minimal legs on the glass.
The nose is very fragrant, with a dash of almond and sweet wildflower honey initially and then blossoming in to a huge, cherry-sweet, spice/honey mixture that, while probably lacking complexity, is certainly unique (to my inexperienced mead nose, anyway). Dries out at the very end, with some anise and hints of white pepper-like notes, maybe chamomille too. No alcohol or much yeast influence.
The flavor, it seems, has the force of the aroma, but that’s where it ends. Sticky, rich, powerfully sweet honey coats (cloys?) the palate and a bold, brash spice/herbal note strikes in to this. Anise, vanilla, chamomille and who knows what else. Very strong, domineering and unbalancing. Much like barrel-aging is currently used in the brewing industry. Rather plain, sticky texture is not overly supportive, no doubt filtered/pasteurized. Alcohol is only slightly warming in flavor but provides a nasty sharpness post-finish.

175ml glass at Reading BF 06. Medicinal honey sweet aroma. Not subtle, some nut and white choc. Honey in mouth and some more medicine on end. Not as good for me as a straight mead.
