A trademark beer of the Santa Fe Brewing Company’s master brewer, Ty Levis, the State Pen Porter has every reason to be one of his favorites. It is flavorful, swimming with notes of nuts and chocolate; it is drinkable, so drinkable that it is almost as if pint after pint were drinking itself; and it packs a punch, so much so that its drinkability rapidly gives way to a euphoric intoxication that only a true Porter drinker can understand.
Malts: 2-row pale, 30-37 l. Crystal, 70-80 l. Crystal, Chocolate.
Hops: Cluster, Cascade, Willamette.

12 oz. can Pours black color with a white tan head, some lacing. Aroma of roasted malts, artificial chocolate, and ash. Flavor is sweet with caramel, artificial chocolate and a very thin body. Tastes like chocolate extract was overused. Nope.

Pours dark brown from the bottle and leaves a frothy, beige head. Aroma is strongly of coffee, accompanied by smokey, earthy notes. Taste is bittersweet with a very mild sour twist at the end. Overall covers a wide spectrum of flavor, and does so with a rich, smooth body that keeps the alcohol well hidden. Good stuff.

Can: Pours almost black with a chunky tan head. Chocolate, coffee, vanilla aroma. Taste is rich, dark chocolate malt, overcooked coffee, cream. A really solid, sweet porter that finishes with a nice roasty bittering.

Bottle. Deep brown body with a frothy, beige head, mostly lasting. Aroma of roasted grain, chocolate, vanilla, light floral hops. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Taste of toasted grain, coffee and cocoa with light roast and hop bitterness carrying through the finish. Good porter.
