This intensely hoppy, ruby ale was first brewed in April 2010 for St.Georges Day. However, the label actually commemorates a lesser known hero, Dr Gideon Mantell, the original Father of Paleontology. The respected Lewes Doctor has become regarded as the person responsible for clearly identifying the prehistoric reptiles we today refer to as ‘dinosaurs’. The label depicts Dr Mantell discovering his Iguanodon near Cuckfield, in Sussex in 1821.

Bottle at the Copenhagen Beer Celebration Tune-Up, London. Thanks to Duff, from RateBeer, for cracking open this rarity with us underlings. Pours clear, honey-amber with a fine cream head. Big fruity, toasty-bready nose. Medium sweet flavor with nice berry fruits, nice toffee sugars. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Dried fruits on the finish with light leather, toffee and caramel. Very nice ESB.

Bottle at the Royal oak. A mostly clear amber brown coloured pour with a a lasting beige head. Aroma is semi sweet, dried fruits, cola cubes, earthy, twigs, mealy apple. Flavour is composed of semi sweet, cola cubes, dried fruits nutty, mealy. Palate is semi sweet, oily moderate carbonation.. Nice.

Bottle at home. Great lacing in the tankard and a rich malt aroma. The taste is well balanced malt and bitter hops with a remarkable mouthfeel. Almost a winey/port flavour going on.

500 ml bottle, from Seven Cellars. ABV is 4.7%. Beautiful clear copper to amber colour, moderate off-white head. Malty aroma, a hint of fruitcake. Malty and fruity flavour too, not very sweet, hints of dark berries and fruitcake, distinct earthy bittering hops in the finish. Good mouthfeel for its ABV.

Bottle from the brewery in Lewes. Don’t have much to comment I haven’t for other Harvey’s ale. All enjoyable although this one came across as more bland than the others. ----- Rerated, same conditions. Homely ale.

Cask at The Royal Oak, Borough. It pours clear mahogany brown with a small white head. The aroma is soft, sweet, toffee, Jamaican ginger bread, earth, wood and spice. The taste is bitter, spicy, leather, wood, leather, fruit cake, toasted nut and earth with a dry, spicy finish. Medium body and low carbonation. A touch flat if anything. Overall not bad.
