Nøgne Ø is proud to have created this beer in cooperation with Nordic Barista Cup. We wanted to make a coffee beer that was diferent and decided to use cascara, the dried husk from coffee bean, instead of roasted beans or actual coffee. A strong cascara tea was blended with the beer and, in addition, cascara was steeped directly in the finished beer. We hope you enjoy the result! The cascara used is from Aida Batlles farm, Los Alpes, in El Salvador and was donated by Solberg & Hansen.

Bottle. (thanks to SirLimpsalot) Amber with a small white head that disappeared rapidly. The nice aroma reminded a lot about a Sour Ale while the taste was something else. The beer was fresh, refreshing and with a light mouth feel. The taste reminded of lemon tea. I also felt some fruit and spices. An interesting beer that was fun to try.

500 ml bottle. Clear, deep golden body with a huge, lasting, creamy off-white head. Aroma is light malty, berries, a hint of tea and a delicate, funky Orval’ish touch. Flavor mild malty, biscuit, some hops, berries, light hop fruity, not very bitter and quite much Orval funkiness. Very easy drinkable and refreshing with a light and delicate funky touch. I had the opportunity to sample this beer four times now, and this funky element is getting more obvious every time. But just like Orval, this should be one of the first beers of the day to get the full impression of all the flavors.

Bottle at Patricks. It’s a hazy golden beer with a dense off-wiite head, two-fingers thick. Some floaties. The flavor has berries, tobacco, spices and the malty and hoppy aromas found in the regular bitter. Berries, tobacco and spices in the flavor, some citrus too. Nice bitterness. Some berries-like acidity. Smooth, medium body. Bitterness and sourish berries in the finish. A beer that doesn’t pull extremely in any direction, but there’s certainly bitterness present, and there’s also a berry-like twist in both aroma and flavor. A beer that won’t impress or provoce, but it’s certainly a beer that explores new territory. Cascara is said to have as much caffeine as the roasted bean, but it doesn’t give that coffee flavor. For a non coffee-drinker like me, this one’s just as nice as a medium alcohol coffee stout. Well, I have to admit I love good coffee stouts. 101008
