Slam Dunkel was a small batch release in 2007. We had such an overwhelming response that we had to put it in the seasonal rotation. We also decided, as brewers, we couldn’t live without drinking this beer every year! This 7% Double Dunkelweizen is unfiltered and made with over 50% wheat malt along with pale, munich, and a touch of chocolate to give it the traditional color and flavor. Bitterness is subdued to allow the Weihenstephen yeast to shine through with those traditional notes of banana and clove. Available in June in bottles and draft. Recipe by Chris Wilson, Head Brewer.

Bottled in a Weiz glass. Lots of head. Taste is off a bit, sounds crazy but there was almost something almost appley about it. It says they used Weihenstephen yeeast and I guess there is something familiar about it.

Heavy clove nose, with cocoa and soil underneath. Murky brown, wispy sediments, firm medium tan head. Creamy mouthfeel. Cocoa, clove, banana flavor. A tad boozy, but the brewer does label this as a double dunkelweizen. While it certainly isn’t quaffable, it’s hardly a chore. Pretty effin neat and a meal unto itself.

Opaque cloudy red - brown beer. Tidy pale tan head. Palate is smooth with a trailing carbonated bite. Sweetish caramel malt, well balanced banana esters. Lactose and a little tangy fruits before the semi dry finish. Drinkable.

A dark clear brown dunkel with a thin brown head. In aroma, a sweet fruity caramel with molasses and light licorice, light solvent. In mouth, a nice smooth chocolate malt with coffee notes, lightly burned, a bit musty.

On tap at Sean Bolan’s. Pours translucent chestnut brown with small beige head. Some thin lacing, low carbonation, medium body, and banana aroma. Taste is roasted malt, big estery banana, and hint of alcohol. Good dunkleweizen.

12 oz bottle from TheEpeeist poured into the Aventinus glass he gave me. Nose is ripe sweet banana, caramel, and a bit of floral and chocolate; only needing some whipped cream aroma to make it smell like a banana split. Murky amber with a big beige head. Flavor is malty banana and caramel with hints of bitter and chocolate. AFAIC a very good enjoyable dunkelweizen.

Total Wine, Chantilly 12oz ($3): I have finally found this beer. For some reason this is hard to find... Pours a muddy brown with a quickly dissipating head that leaves barely any lacing. Aroma is bananarama, with wheat, and some spice. Taste is bubblegum, banana, and some roasted malts. Taste is quite smooth. Body is somewhat thicker than most wheat beers. Leaves some of the sugary stickiness in the aftertaste. Quite good.

12 ounce bottle thanks to Dan. Pours a cloudy, really very murky, brown color with a small beige head. A sweet nose of bananas, some caramel and toffee. The flavor is a rich Dunkel with plenty of banana and spices, some sweet brown sugar and earthiness. Quite raw and tasty.

Bottle @ Dan’s. Somewhat hazy, orangish brown appearance with an off white head. Rich chocolate (german chocolate?), rich toffee aroma. Quite sweet, coconut, toffee, great dessert beer.
