On tap at the brewpub: Amber coloured, quite firm off-white head; distinctive sweet-dark-malty nose with a touch of roasted malt; robust sweet-bitter flavour, medium-bodied, soft MF; slightly lingering sweet-malty finish with a distinctive touch of smoked malt in the aftertaste. Good and moreish..........

(On tap) Clear, amber golden with a creamy, off-white head leaving some lacework. Lightly caramelish aroma. Medium body with a good malty feel and a hoppy - distinctly hoppy - finish where also some alcohol shows. 101106

Lighter chestnut, very clear; cream-coloured, dense & big head. Rich bread nose, some Kümmel included. Lots of caramel too, maybe even some Maillard. And, incongruously, Chinese shrimps in batter (sorry). Eeeeh! - that's a nice bitterness for a German brew. Good malty (sweet and roasted) underbuild, but the noble German-type hops reign. I still suspect Maillard. Titillating mouthfeel & carbonation as from mineral water. Medium to full-bodied. Rather long bitterish aftertaste, with malt-syrup. As John & Edo said, this beer is far above the general Franconian level. Very good - thanks to L. Meulders who has a good nose for a good pint. --- Beer aliased from original tick of Dunkel Rauchbier on 15 Aug 2009 at 02:32 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 9 | Flavor - 7 | Texture - 10 | Overall - 8. Original review text: Draught Copper-foxy beer, amberish tinted head. Good, if restrained smoked hamaroma, smoked beechwood. NICE! Fresh, smoked malt/ham flavours, with a sweet finish. Much more refreshing than the "usual" Rauchbiere; medium bodied, sticky as a Rauchbier ought to be. Nice one. A good one to compare to the Rauchzart from Barnikel, Herrnsdorf.
