The character pictured on the front of this label is Jonathan Holmberg. Jonathan has been a bartender at what now is Jackie O’s for the past 15 years. In 2004 he helped me get my foot in the door and has been a dear friend ever since. Jonathan is a true eccentric and this beer is nothing short of that. Our robust porter was placed into Cabernet barrels eight months ago. Wild yeast and Lactobacillus were added to the barrels to give the beer a tart edge and some very rustic and fruity qualities. Sixty pounds of tart cherries were added to each barrel to take this beer in a unique direction. Notes of cherries, oak, chocolate, wine, and leather all find a special spot in this brew. Cab Cherry Man is a beer that can stand up to the antiquing, joking, halloween-loving, and sweet personality that is Jonathan’s. Cheers, buddy! -Brad Clark, brewer

Note: Cab Cherry Man may be labeled as Cherry Man on the draft menu, but all recent batches have been barrel aged and ratings belong here.

Approximately 4 ounce sample at the Jackie O’s Public House in Athens, Ohio. The pour is hazed brown black ruby with not much of a tan head. The aroma is big Cabernet wine, light malt sweet and roast behind that. The taste is big Cab character, sour cherries, and followed by the light roast of the porter. The palate is medium bodied, still, oily, dry wine booze and cherry character finish. Nice, though a bit heavy handed on the wine character. Creative, well executed.

Very dark red beer, light passes through - just! Lovely nose of quality red wine and dark cherry. Light palate, fairly dry. Tangy beer - bordering sour. Man this is good! The red wine dominates, tangy, fruity and with peppery blackcurrant. The base porter peeps through with a mild fresh dark malt. Seamlessly integrated is sweet and sour cherry. Finishes a little tart with more cherry and red wine. The most wine like beer I’ve had and head and shoulders above the other wine barrel beers.

22oz bottle pours a watery, fully translucent black with ruddy edges and some creamy, fading head. Nose is big, vinous, red grapes, red wine vinegar, cherries. Flavor is sweet, tart, cherries, some nice chocolate roastiness, some balsamic, red grape. Sour but not abrasive, acidic finish.

2011 bottle 83 of 384 with many thanks to Beerman6686! Pours dark almost black with off white/light tan head. Vinous notes with dark cherries, oak, chocolate covered cherries and soured caramel. Taste is essentially the same. Nice velvety texture. Initially very vinous with a nice sour cherry body. The chocolate/caramel porter comes out more in the finish. Sprinkles of oak and vanilla throughout. Well balanced.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of gn0sis. Bottle # 134/156. Pours a cloudy and almost murky with hardly any head. Tart cherries dominate the nose - combined with some wood and Brett. Medium body, almost flat, hardly any roastiness left, tobacco accents and again tart cherries. No real bitterness. Very nice - comes out close to a Flemish Red in style. 230211

Bottle shared by Sean, thanks! Poured a clear brown with an off-white head that started and remained at the edges and laced nicely. Aroma had a note of dry red wine with red fruits and some underlying dark and roasted grains. Flavor had a dry red wine note with red fruits and a bit of roasted grains lying underneath.
