Pours amber brown. It smells of caramel malt and lightly citrusy hops. The flavor is mildly to moderately bitter with caramel malt, citrus hops, and some lingering bitterness. Good.

Keg at Sugar Maple, 9/17/16. Clear copper, medium foamy tan head, good retention. Aroma of toasted malt and caramel. The taste is toasted malt, grain, floral hops, honey. Medium bodied, mild lingering bitterness.

Bottle: Hazy amber, with a tight, beige head. Slightly fruity, candied-toffee aroma. Florally sweet, toffee malt, grain malt flavour. Nice body.....very pleasant.

Different Label (than pictured) with the whole of Michigan as two leaves in some water. Nice look with a very hazy brown and super copper coloured body with a thick, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of toffee, metal, earth and alcohol - quite pungent. Medium-bodied; Strong malt flavour with a good caramel flavour, some bitter earthy hops along with a light metallic flavour and some subdued raisin and grape flavours at the end. Aftertaste shows a touch of a smoked peat flavour coupled with a lot of malt and metal and some light hops as well, but the caramel is by far the strongest with toffee alongside. Overall, a good beer for the style, complete with a nice profile, some light complexity, and just overall good flavour for the style. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased for US$1,99 at Siciliano’s in Grand Rapids, Michigan on 11-September-2015 sampled at home in Washington on 08-November-2015.

Bottle: Poured an burnt orange with heavy sediment, head was thin off white. Aroma is heavy on malts and sweet. Taste is light bitterness, leafy, malts. Numb feeling on my tongue finish.

352 mml bottle tasted on the 21/10/2014. Fruity and hoppy aroma but not all intense that it must be. Clear orange colour with a minimal bubbly white head. Taste of yeast, herbs, grass and flowers note. Bitter on paladar. Nice aftertaste. Medium body and medium carbonatin. Next one please!

I am reviewing this from notes recently found from a time I spent in Michigan.
I had bought a bottle and this was poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a hazy orange to brown color with a nice one finger white foamy head. The lacing tries to speckle itself around the glass, but ends up sliding for the most part.
The smell is quite earthy and rustic in an English sort of sense and leading into a nice maltiness reminiscent of a nice Autumn day.
The taste is an earthy malty Autumn-spice-like (ginger, maybe some pumpkin spices).
On the palate, it sat light to medium with a nice sessionable aspect to it. The carbonation is good for the ESB style and for me as its somewhat smooth but not too smooth and ends up having a decent creaminess running about my mouth and tongue.
Overall, good ESB coming from an American Brewer. Way to go, Short’s! This makes me wanna retire in Michigan.
