17th Feb 2019. Hand-pulled half-pint in the Station Hotel, Oakengates. Black body, thin head of lightly tanned foam. Coffee, vanilla ice cream and liquorice in both the nose and taste, fairly sweet and slick in the mouth, liked it.

500ml bottle. Darkest clear brown with creamy stable off-white head. Slightly smokey, salty, herbal salami-like aroma. Average to lively carbonation supports salty taste harmonically, really dry in a prickling mode, not in that soapy, grassy full-tongue depositing way. Smoked sausage and salty liquorice. For sure not everyman’s taste, but I like it.

Cask at the Crosse Keys, JDW, London. Pours deep brown with a small, white foam head. Aroma has a lot of charred malts and light rubber. Flavor is OK. Medium sweet with some burnt baking cocoa, dry roast malts, earth, scorched leaves. Medium in body with fine to soft carbonation. Dry and lightly chalky roasted malt finish, with some dark and burnt cocoa, slight sugar and scorched earth. Not bad overall.

Cask at the John Logie Baird (JDW), Hastings. Sooty black with a ruby glow and a ring of beige head; aroma of chocolate malts and a touch of licorice; rather thinly bodied with sweet malts to start then dry with bitter chocolate, strong coffee and some smoke; the finish is dry with long lasting hops. A rather good porter.

Cask@St. Urho’s Pub, Helsinki. Very deep ambery brown colour, close to black, with a small beigeish brown head. Aroma is roasted malts, some chocolate, mild fruityness as well as some mild coffeeish notes. Flavour is quite similar. A bit thin in the palate, otherwise rather nice.

Bottle, courtesy of fonefan. A dark brown beer with some reddish hues. Dense, firm beige head of moderate size. The aroma is a bit unusual, with a pleasant blend of coffee and dried dark fruits. Some chocolate and hints of orange as well. It’s full-bodied and a bit over-carbonated. The flavor is a bit on the sweet side, maybe a bit citrusy sour too, but the same pleasant coffee and dark chocolate found in the aroma are present, although weaker. Well, the aroma is a fine one, the flavor is just a tad more than mediocre, but it’s still a fine beer. 110128
