Fear and Trembling is Hill Farmstead’s first collaboration – a Baltic Porter brewed with malt that was hand-smoked over maple wood by our Danish friend, and former colleague, Anders Kissmeyer. This bottled version was aged in French Oak Cabernet barrels. As a student of philosophy and former resident of Copenhagen, it is fitting that our brewer named our first collaboration after Denmark’s great thinker: Søren Kierkegaard. All three contemplated absurdity, faith, and salvation while wandering the shores of the Baltic Sea…

Bottle thanks to JMFP. Pours a very dark brown with small tan head that lasts. The aroma is strong oak, licorice, molasses, roast, cocoa. Slick body, smoke, peat, licorice, molasses, oak, very boozy, held up very well.

Bottle @ Steve_0’s HF party. Thanks André! Black appearance with a thin brown head. Lightly fruity, meaty smoky, mild plum, earthy flavor. Clean flavor. Maybe a touch astringent. Burnt malty, chocolate, a little ashy, grape/plum flavor. Great.

Opaque dark brown beer. Tidy tan head. Palate has body and is semi dry with fine carbonation. Nice dark malt - it has weight but avoids roast or bitterness. Very mild smoke and mellow coffee. Unsweet dark chocolate and mild wood. Subtle red wine presents itself at the end and lingers in to the aftertaste. Goods stuff - charms with it’s balance.

A friend shared this with me. It’s a year old now and still tasting great. Enjoyed in a Hill Farmstead Glass. (Reviewed on my iPhone)
A one finger coffee head , oily slick black. Pitch black. Lacing some alcohol legs
S cocoa nibs. Coffee. Cream espresso , maple syrup, sugar
T wood smoked wood and malt. Red wine (Cabernet)
M - 50% mouth feel. Heavy bodied. Wood and oak linger
O - Pretty good. Definitely an A grade

Bottle. Pours black with a big head. The aroma has got notes of smoke, chocoalte and red berries, Taste is quite vinous, with notes of red berries and smoke. Smooth creamy and big bodied. Great mouthfeel. The alcohol is well hidden. Elegant beer!

500mL bottle, sent from gn0sis (thanks Eric!), pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of smoked malts, dark fruits and dry red wine - dominated by the smoke though. Flavour of smoked / burnt malts upfront, candied dark fruits, red wine / dry vinous characteristics and oak barrels. Finishes semi-sweet, oaky and smokey. Very full-bodied and wonderfully balanced. Excellent.

Bottle shared at The Kernel with Evin and Nate, thanks to Shaun. I was focused on enjoying this beer with the Kernel lads so didn’t focus on notes until the dust had settled, as it were. Some recollections, which don’t necessarily do the beer justice: Smokey nose. Wood and roast. Sweet flavor, notes of cocoa. Oily with some resin and dirt and earth. Unreal good. This was just a fantastic beer on every front.

Bottle thanks to thirdeye11. Pours with a small tan head that fades very quickly. Deep brown body. Aroma is smokey and bacony, with maple, light oak/coconut and plenty of caramelization notes. Flavors are chocolate, maple, bacon and a ton of nearly exaggerated caramel. Oak or barrel notes are somewhat light in the flavor. Light bubbles.
