Taster showing pitch black with sparse latte colored foam.
The nose shows moderately intense notes of sweet molasses.
The palate is full bodied and lightly carbonated. A hint of sweetness with moderate notes of licorice and molasses. Mild espresso bitterness on the finish.

Bottle. A- Tobacco, roasty, cocoa, char, molasses. A- Black color, black liquid, brown head. T- Licorice, tree bark, molasses, mild rum, cocoa. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- A 2017 vintage that aged pretty well. Rum is definitely there but not boozy. A big beer for sure. I'd say this is one of the better barrel aged Abyss. Perhaps it was the aging as well.

2017 edition (9/15/17) bottle pour in trade with AirForceHops--thanks, Chris! Appearance is opaque black with no sparkle, finger-width light brown fizzy head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is sweet roasted malt, anise, molasses, rum with mild alcohol burn noticeable. Taste is as aroma. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with smooth, velvety texture, soft carbonation, some alcohol burn traveling up into the nostrils and sinuses but some nice esophageal warmth as well and finish as taste. Overall, decent complexity which all works pretty well. Alcohol is surprisingly present given additional 2.5 years. Quite good but not transcendent.

Bottle at Black Christmas 2018
Lots of glue and high alcohol in this one, burning, muddling the dark malt qualities.
One of the less appreciated Abyss variants.

From a bomber. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of rum and stewed prunes. Flavors are dank oak and bitter chocolate. Not an improvement over the original Abyss but still a nice beer.

2017 bottle enjoyed a few weeks ago. Dark inky black with a thin mocha head that dissipates rather quickly. Lots of rum and harsh alcohol on the nose. and in the flavor. Roasty chocolate is mowed down by the onslaught of rum and higher alcohols. Faint cherry and vanilla but honestly I can't get past the rum.
