8/VIII/25 - on tap, shared @ Vetter’s Alt Heidelberger brewery (Heidelberg, DE) nearing the end of our Schwarzwald holiday, BB: n/a (2025-xxx)
Ever so slightly cloudy amber beer, creamy dense beige head, unstable, falls down quickly, leaving some lacing in the glass. Aroma: sourish impression, this smells downright infected, weird, fishy as well. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: weird unpleasant acidity, lactic acid, dirty, not good. No typical German Hefeweizen yeast taste, clearly infected. Aftertaste: more acidic, unpleasant, dirty, bah!
After bringing this to the waitress’ attention, she didn’t really react to it. But she did pass on the message, because 5 minutes later, the brewer came in. He was a fairly young guy, definitely can’t have been the same person brewing 13 years ago when I last visited. He tried gaslighting me, telling me that I can’t expect beers to taste the same like beers from industrial breweries, because everything is small scale, and is produced artisanal, etc… After telling him I’ve tried over 20K beers and I can tell there’s an infection in the beer, he admitted that this batch had a problem, but - reading between the lines - they basically didn’t give a fuck, and were going to sell it to tourists anyway. Great attitude! I wasn’t going to enter the beers I accidentally already tried 13 years ago, but this sort of attitude needs to be called out. So there you go. Replacing my original rating with this most recent rerating, as this is what you can expect from these guys.

Cloudy muddy red brown beer, beige creamy head, unstable, pretty adhesive. Aroma: quite some overripe banana, milk chocolate. MF: good carbon, medium body. Taste: ripe banana, bit sweet, sugary touch, little bready, brown sugar, almost caramel, little sourish. Aftertaste: bitter hops, caramel, banana, pretty dry ending.

Enjoyed on tap while eating the best Bratwurst of a recent trip to the Baden-Wurttemberg region of Germany, of course at Vettrs in Heidelberg on a beautiful mid 70s day. I didn’t take notes during this one, but I remember it being pretty good. Standard dark cloudy brown appearance, taste went down a little too quickly. Good good stuff.

Draught @ Vetter Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus, Steingasse 9, Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany 69117.Murky medium grey amber color with a average, frothy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white head. Aroma is light moderate malty, caramel, moderate yeasty, fruity, banana notes. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20100927]

Draught at the brewpub. Mild banana aroma. Cloudy amber brown colour. Semi-stable tan head. The flavour has a little banana, turning citric after a while. Not so flavourful or interesting.

Swing-top bottle from brewery. Ripe banana, clove, and caramel malt aroma. Cloudy dark brown color with moderate head. Bland wheat malt flavor - light banana notes but no dark malt flavors. Not much flavor with this one.

Medium yellowish beige lasting head. Muddy brown body. Sugary wheaty aroma, very mild. Light mild faintly bananaish papery taste with spicy, herbal notes. Watery, chalky mouthfeel. Light, easy-drinking, boring. No aftertaste, either. Peppery milky taste lingers. (0.3l draft at brewpub.)

Cloudy dark amber color; big head. Typical aroma, wheat, cloves. Light body, some malt and caramel, some spices, the wheat. Very light sourness (it’s the end of the keg, no more fresh enough).

(On tap) Slightly hazy orangey brown with a small, off-white head leaving some laces. Aroma of yeast and banana. Medium body, rather tart with accents of roasted malt and rye bread - and banana of course. Citric acidity. 270606
