23rd March 2025
Near clear deep amber brown beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, a very mild dryness. Decent fine carbonation. Soft malts, good caramel and toffee malts and free from any excessive sweetness. The Gin barrelling works wonderfully well here. Soft flinty alcohol and juniper spices, softened by a little oak barrel induced vanilla. Soft finish. Yeah, nicely done. On paper, a gin barrel barleywine is a tricky thing to pull off but, pulled off with aplomb by the Cool Heads.

Right. Sweet, smooth, intense with gin and floral notes, some spicy rye, juniper, sherry, raisins, prunes and oak. Quite intense and sweet slow sipper.

(Keg at CoolHead Taproom, 20250205) The beer poured black. Its head was small and lightly brown. Aroma had toasted malts, juniper berries, spiciness and vanilla. Palate was medium bodied, warming and dry with medium carbonation. Flavours were toasted malts, spiciness, juniper berries, vanilla, toffee and bitterness. Aftertaste was dry and had spiciness, malts and bitterness. A pleasant blend of base beer and barrel.
