Samuel Adams Imperial Stout is our take on the stouts brewed by 18th century English brewers for the Russian Imperial Court of Catherine II. The special malted barley in this intense and massive brew delivers rich flavours like dark chocolate, coffee and anise.

Aroma of roasted malt, liquorice, dark chocolate, dark fruity notes, coffee, creamy notes. Flavour is moderate sweet with a moderate roasty bitter finish. Smooth and creamy, fairly enjoyable, but I’ve had far better Imperial Stouts.

355ml bottle. Jet black colour with late awakening, average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, tan head. Roasty, chocolately, dark malty and fruity aroma, notes of dark chocolate, blueberry, blackberry, some cherry, a touch of molasses, cocoa, minimally smoky overtones. Taste is sweet-ish, roasty and chocolately dark malty, fruity hoppy, notes of dark chocolate, hints of blueberry, blackberry, a touch of cherry, minimally smoky overtones, a minimally metallic touch as well, some aniseed; vestiges of alcohol in the finish. Not the most complex Impy Stout, but focussed, pursuing a clear idea.

Bottle from MiP, thamk you and Happy Birthday, my friend! Pours cloudy nearly black with creamy, stable dark tan head. Dark aroma of malt, fruit and roast, with notes of coffee and chocolate. Sweetish flavour of malt, chocolate and fruit, with bitter, roasty and coffeelike notes. Roasty and estery aftertaste with notes of malt. Creamy mouthfeel. Warming alcohol presence. Well-balanced and good.
