Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks troubles. Dark brown color with a huge beige head. Aroma of malt, dark bread, a bit of toastiness, nutty notes, a bit of caramel and some earthy hops. Sweetish malty flavor with some toastiness, caramel hints and a dry finish, slightly bitter and earthy. Light to medium-bodied.

[Cask at the Belle Vue, High Wycombe] Vivid dark red - really red, none of your ruby-black nonsense - with a thick yellowy-beige head. Definite blackcurrant with some vanilla and caramel. A little smoke too but on the sweet side and rather thin. OK.

Bottle from the Edgeware Road Waitrose. Pours rather dark brown with a transient tan head. Aroma suggests a fruity porter. Near medium body. Flavor is very smooth dark malt with some nuttiness and conflicting fruit/citrus? hop. Here, I think, the whole is more than the some of the parts. This is fairly strong in flavor. Finishes neutral on sweet/dry. Drinks great.

Bottle. Pours very dark brown with a foamy beige head. Nutty, chocolate aroma. Mildy sweet chocolate flavor, with some light nuttiness. The flavor is better than the description. It’s quite pleasant.

500ml Bottled conditioned: shared with a mate on 15 Feb during a random beer tasting evening. Looked fine: really dark, almost black like its name. good full tan coloured head of foam sat on each half-pint glasses. The smell was weaker than I expected: notes of dark chocolate and coffee, but not overly strong. The taste a more roundly roasted, malty feel than the aroma hinted at. Not as sweet either, semi-bitter maybe. The body was OK to thin: thin when looking at the colouring but OK if you are thinking about the the 3.9% ABV the bottle has (0.6% more than the cask version). All in all, not bad.

On cask @ the Hawes Inn, South Queensferry. Pours opaque black with a cream head. The nose has a very faint hint of the chocolate that I’d expected. There’s also a hint of nuttiness as the name implies but overall it is more of malt. The taste is pretty much the same. The palate is fairly well balance with a medium structure and creamy texture and a reasonably clean finish. Overall, nothing special.

Mild ale, dark with a red glow, no head. Has a slightly sweet, slightly nutty aroma, less than its name would suggest. The same can be said for its taste. --- Beer merged from original tick of Dark Mild / Dark (Filtered) on 23 Aug 2012 at 15:35 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 5 | Flavor - 4 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 4.5. Original review text: Some nose, nice and smooth to drink, but does not hold much in the way of flavour.

Cask at the Carpenters Arms, Windsor - 22/12/12. Very dark mahogony brown with a thin tan head that retains well. Nose is dark malt, liqourice, touch of wood and spice. Taste comprises roast malts, liqourice, light tar, blackcurrant. Light to medium in body with soft carbonation and smooth on the palate. A decent enough mild.

Can from Tesco Forres 101212
Dark ruby brown, big bubbly tan head, some lacing
Aroma - Very soft dark malts, very little on the nose
Taste - Dark malts, very soft roasted malt, soft sweet dark malts, light chocolate. Light but good flavour for such a low abv out of a can.
Palate - soft carb, thin to medium body, a bit viscous. Finish as main flavour, fairly smooth.
Overall - This was pretty decent for a 3.2% abv canned beer that was only around 80p a can. Good flavour at such a low abv and highly drinkable.
