The Thomas Hooker Imperial Porter is a full-bodied dark lager which draws its roots to the stronger porters of 19th Century England which would evolve into today’s stronger stouts. The porter derives tremendous complexity from the use of 8 different malts blended to balance sweet, caramel flavor with the coffeeish taste supplied by a judicious use of dark roasted malts. This brew is generously hopped with German and American hops that come to life as the beer is allowed to warm to its ideal temperature of 58-60 degrees. A great brew to add that holiday warmth and cheer to any beer lover’s winter. CHEERS.

Bottle at home in Salisbury, CT - don’t remember where I got this. I think it must be at least a year old. Pours dark brown with a creamy tan head. The aroma has aged fruits, chocolate, some wood, sherry, grapes, currants. Medium to big sweet flavor with a bit of roast, subtle bitter char, sugary chocolate, dried dark fruits, faintly tangy berries. Medium to full. Odidd with average carbonation. Sweet finish, somewhat sticky, with more lightly bitter charred malts, sugary chocolate, dark fruits, touches of molasses, mellow alcohol kick. Interesting stuff.

From a bottle. Volatile dark chocolate aroma. Big black pour seems viscous. First taste is impressively strong and bitter and wants to knock your socks off. Thick mouth coating dull imperial stout effects. Burntwood and almost like tastting lye. Quite an insult to the porter style, wew. Yes, over the top and downthe side. I guess if there is such a style as impy porter, whcih is not really impy stout, this may be it. Overall beer experience is just plain rude nastiness. Mouth coating old 60w shovel head oil in my mouth.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a black-brown color with a large creamy brown head that lingered and left great lacing. The aroma was fairly strong toasty malts, chocolate and marshmallow. The flavor was toasty and roasty with notes of vanilla, chocolate, marshmallow, coffee and light fruity hops. Long bitter finish. Moderately full bodied and creamy. Interesting.

12 oz bottle. Pours a dark brown with a small off white head leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is vanilla and oak. Medium mouthfeel with syrupy malt and chocolate and nice sugary finish. A very impressive imperial porter from Thomas Hooker.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Buy Rite, 10/24/11

Aroma: A malty nose with some roasted and burnt malts, and drops of chocolate and coffee
Appearance: This one pours a dark brown color with a small light brown head and mid heavy lace
Flavor: The taste is similar to the nose, malty and roast, light-medium sweet, hints of earth on finish
Palate: Light-medium bodied (lighter then expected for the style), with a creamy mouthfeel, and no burn
Overall Impression: Overall, I thought this was a decent Imperial Porter, but it just didn't quite hit for me. There was something a little lacking, maybe a little thin, about it in both flavor and body, that kept the score from being higher.
