14th April 2010. Clear dark red brown beer. Smooth semi dry palate. Nicely joined up beer. Smooth dark malt. Pretty fruity - cherry, orange, tangy. Some subtle dark chocolate underneath. Dry finish. Tasty and very drinkable.

Cask (handpump) @ The Back of Beyond, 104-108 Kings Road, Reading, Berkshire, England RG1 3BY.Clear dark red brown color with a average to large, frothy to creamy, good lacing, mostly lasting, off-white to light beige head. Aroma is moderate malty, bread, roasted, brown sugar. Flavor is moderate sweet and bitter with a average to long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft to flat. [20100428]

[Gravity cask at the Back of Beyond, Reading] Black with ruby hints, no head. Sweet chocolate, camp coffee and a bit of treacle causes it to be rather sweet up front. However, it’s saved by roasted malt coming through in the surprisingly dry finish. It’s rather nice actually.

Cask @ Edward Wylie, JDW. Dark brown - red colour, tan lacings. Aroma is toasted malts, sweet licorice. Flavour of sweet licorice, roasted malts, some fruits. A bit watery. Agree on the aniseed mention. A bit smoky. Lots of things going on in this beer, but its a bit on the sweet side.

Cask at the Monks Retreat (JDW), Reading. Black with a reddish glow and ring of tan head; aniseed aroma; thinly bodied, the flavour blends aniseed and fruit with a light waft of smoke. Very drinkable.

cask at standing order JDW ... deep red brown ... thin tan head ... soft fruity roast malt nose .... lots of dark berries ... nice light plum and chocolate 2.8 .... tk2 ... lots of licorice ... much more than my notes suggest ... berries ... again plum ... tasty 3.8

Cask-conditioned at Penderel’s Oak (JDW), High Holborn 9/04/10. Near black with a decent, off-white head. Sweet chocolate, light roastiness, marred by something vegetal in the background. Ok.

Cask at Penny Black, Wetherspoons, Bicester. Poured pretty much black much like I expected. Some sweetness and oaky notes in the aroma,taste has a bit of bite a little sour tang around the edges but tempered with some sweetness, very pleasant.

Cask handpull at County Hotel JDW Ashford and Thomas Ingoldsby JDW Canterbury. Black colour with ruby edges. Bubbly tan head. The Ashford sample had too much butter on the aroma for me. Sourish in mouth, but the dominated by butter/caramel. Faint dark malts make their way through, but I wasn’t keen. The Canterbury sample was similar but a little less butter/caramel. Still not something I would want again.1.5/5.0 Re-rate County Hotel, Ashford. So much better. Decent black stout, more like a dunkel really.
