"Thistle Beer" from Cairngorm Brewery. A reddish brown ale, bittered with thistle and late Goldings hops. Hints of roast malt and fruit finish this most complex of beers. Alias with M&S Scottish Ale confirmed at the brewery (Oakes).

500ml bottle at home. Pours clear dark brown, no head. Aroma has toffee and a weird herbal note, almost minty. Taste has a sweet Cola-like quality. Finishes thin. Not impressed.

Bottle from Aldi. Clear amber/brown body with a thin off-white head. Light carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of lightly roasted malt, fruit and a touch of metal. Flavour of malt, earth, ginger and red fruits. Thin body with a watery texture. Soft carbonation. A straightforward Bitter.

500 ml bottle. Clear amber body with a decent pale beige head. Aroma has malt and some butterscotch. Flavor is sweet caramel malt, hint of milk chocolate and some bitterness. Medium body and a bit weak in aftertaste. Pretty ordinary and a bit marred from butterscotch.

50cl bottle from the Tollhouse, Dalwhinnie. Pours dark amber with a decent head. The nose has some roastiness as well as a fresh note - perhaps the hops or the thistle but very hard to nail. More of the same on the taste. The palate is medium bodied and creamy with a decent finish. Overall, another solid ale.

Bottle shared with ClubGonzo and Veitafan. Have a dark golden amber colour with a small light tan head. The aroma is dominated by sweet malt, sweet cake, vanilla cookies, anise and a little caramel. The taste is a little more careful with a touch of leather and wood, and a little caramel, spices, hops and anise. Mouth feel is easy and smooth and, has a light bitterness. An interesting and easy to drink beer, and is decent enough.
