A black beer brewed with roasted barley malt and challenger hops. Then freshly ground Arabica coffee beans, blended especially for Dark Star, are added to the copper for a few minutes after the boil to provide a rich and complementary coffee aroma. NOT EVERYONE’S CUP OF TEA!

Very dark brown, thin tan head, good lacing
Aroma of soft roasted malts, good quality coffee
Taste - nice smooth dark mellow roasted malts, soft premium coffee, touch of dark bitter chocolate, no hops, good flavour for abv
Palate - soft carb, thin to medium body, texture smooth and quite oily, good smooth dark malts. Finish as main flavour, smooth
Overall - This was a good, tasty coffee stout for the abv

Cask at Birmingham Beer Fest 2012; Almost black colour, roast malt and chocolate aroma, shock horror this tasted a bit like a strong coffee with some hint of chocolate. Just a slight bit of hop bitterness towards the end. Slightly watery mouth feel. Very good stout.

Gravity dispense at the twelfth Twickenham Beer Festival - 18/10/12. Mid black in appearance with a frothy tan head. Big roast nose backed up with a great espresso aroma and a little smoke. Rich roast malt taste with espresso in the background, caramelised sugar. Medium bodied with a low level of carbonation lending towards a dry and bitter finish. Excellent cask coffee stout, so much more life than the bottled version!

Cask at CP&K. It pours deep ruby, with a medium beige head. The nose is roasted malt, coffee, light smoke, leather and a touch of chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit, light acidity, leather and some bitter chocolate, with a dry finish. Medium body and soft carbonation. Alright.

Cask @ O’Connell’s, Tampere. Rated on 05.11.2010
Aroma has lots of espresso and some chocolate. Flavour has some well roeasted espresso and hints of caramel. Feels a bit like a light brown ale. A bit watery but espresso notes are rather nice here. A bit worse than the bottle version.

27/05/2011 Brasserie 4:20 (cask).

Cask at the Euston Tap. Opaque, dark brown pour with a light tan head. Bitter espresso and dark malt aroma. Flavor is really dominated by coffee grounds, with light sweetness and roastiness. Light to medium in body. I like the finish a bit more than the flavor. There’s a bit more malty sweetness here and the coffee flavor smooths out a bit. Lightly roasty with justs hints of ashy bitterness. Nice beer.
