Phipps IPA, brewed to an authentic 1930s recipe, is a golden beer relying solely on the pale ale malt in its grist for its colour. The classic blend of Goldings and Fuggles hops gives the characteristic English ale flavours to this full-bodied beer. The balance of bitterness and sweetness, allied to a smooth hoppy after-taste, creates a most drinkable pint.

Cask at GBBF ’15, day 3, 13/08/15. Clear light golden with a moderately appointed off white cap. Nose is bready, pale malt, grain, cereal notes. Taste comprises straw, caramel, light vanilla, grain, hint of melon. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. So very so.

Gravity cask at the Shirley Beer Festival 2015. Poured a clear straw colour with a frothy white head. The aroma is buttery malt, light hop. The flavour is moderate to light bitter with a smooth, light floral hop bitter palate. Light to medium bodied with soft carbonation.

Update: I understand that this beer has moved from Grainstore in Rutland to its original home in Northampton. The beer I had tonight was a considerable improvement. Hay, honey and orange peel in the aroma, with a balanced sweet taste. ---- Cask @ Rose & Crown, Yardley Hastings, 18.12.13. Mid gold. Persistent medium head. Weird but not unpleasant aroma of golden syrup and cardboard. Slight grassy hop notes. Syrupy sweet on initial taste, then bitter/sour with a mixed finish. Bitter aftertaste. So-so. Fuller mouthfeel than most real ales, Overall, drinkable but not particularly impressive and no more an IPA than my cheese sandwich.
