Purchased 2009 at Binny’s ($2.69/single). 199th Wisconsin beer! Not a dark brown so much as opaque, with some highlights at the corners of my shaker glass. Nice puff of brown foam. Sweet smell from two feet away: kind of heady and with a note of milk chocolate. Closer in I get the grainy smell that has come with some Baltic and regular porters. Slight suggestion of mint from hops? In a word, interesting. The first sip proclaims a malt that seems no more thick than a regular beer, but then it leaves behind some viscosity of an imperial styled dark beer. A slight hint of apple or pear in the background, and some treacle in the malt roast. Being as this is pretty much my substitute for all the Surly Darkness events I’m missing, it fills the bill pretty nicely. Drinking further brings on a slight heady-ness of alcohol, and some chocolate Easter bunny impressions. Sweet, doesn’t demand gentle sipping. A good, strong dark beer.

12oz bottle pours a transparent, chocolate, brown with a thin, beige head. Looks more like a doppelbock than any type of porter. Nose is malty, yeast, pumpernickel bread, a little fruity, a little chocolate. Nose smells more like a bock. Flavor is sweet, molasses, a little milk chocolate, a little dark chocolate, toasted rye bread, wet malts, plums. Finish is medium bodied and dry. This is a little weird, there’s something that’s just a little off in the nose and flavor.

Tasting at Papsø
Hazy red-amber color, dark, with small creamy head. Aroma of dark caramel, cereals, light alcohol, dust, vegetable esthers. Smooth mouthfeel, with chocolate flavor, dust, oxidized malt. Low bitterness. Dusty oxidized beer, slighlty flawed.

12oz bottle. Sweet and rich. Sort of light colored for the style. Brown sugar with lots of pungent dark fruity esters. Quite drinkable despite the sweetness. Alcohol certainly makes itself known and is ever-present. Slight burnt brown sugar in the aroma.

Another rare one from Skyview. From a growler. Dark brown and there is a thick, but short cream colored head on it. The aroma comes out as it warms, and has sweet, dark fruit and malt. Sweet flavor with malt and yeast, as well as port, plums, cherry, and some oak. Rich, thick palate. --from a bottle, not as good. it tasted like a bock.
