Thanks to tderoeck for sharing! Sampled draft @ Brugs Bier Festival 2018. Hazy golden, big creamy white head. Nose is massively extremely awfully sweet with banana & soap. Taste is same awful sweet paper, garbage, banana, soap, extreme, white sugar & chemical sweetener cloying affair. Body is terrible bubble gum, yikes.

Helder geel lichtgeel bier met schuim. Smaak is licht fruitig en ietwat zoetzuur met iets van sinaasappel, citrus en een vleugje koriander. Is verder wat waterig.

Pours unclear blonde, big stable white head. Smell is sweet, some spices. Taste is full, sharp , wheat, orange peel, coriander. Esthers quite high. OK at best.

One of these two new Baptist beers intended to celebrate and consolidate Van Steenberge's new brewpub, named after the 18th-century founder of the brewery. The blonde one was first, but soon came this 'white' version; steini bottle from Van Eetvelde in Lokeren. Tightly cobweb-lacing, egg-white, medium thick, moussy head remaining closed and stable for a very long time, atop a lightly hazy, pale straw blonde colour with golden hue. Aroma teems with non-witbier odours, featuring fake banana, industrial apple juice, diacetyl-like melting butter, pear, cream, plaster, chewing gum, wallpaper glue, canned apricot, buttercups, cinnamon, lime pie, hand soap or even lavender, minerals, meringue, plastic, some wet hay. Sweet onset, sugared apples again, pear, banana, hint of pineapple, sourish hint of wheat persisting in the middle, minerally but not overly numbing carbonation. This 'white sugary' sweetness lingers honeyishly over the middle, covering a cereally, soapy maltiness and wheatiness, very rounded and almost unpleasantly soapy in mouthfeel, with thin grainy edges; finishes in more soapiness due to coriander seed, as well as a grassy, hardly bittering, bit floral (buttercup) hop note; a certain lemon peel-like flavour develops, but it too feels artificial and is uncapable of balancing out this beer's overt soapiness. Some faint bready yeast notes as well, with this basic, 'generic' and 'white' wheat sourishness and this equally 'blank' sugary sweetishness lingering alongside the remainders of the initial sweetness and the coriander. Clearly an attempt at pleasing as many non-geeky beer drinkers as possible, adding sweetness and artificial citrusiness to end up with something sweet and soapy enough that it should become quaffable by just about anyone. Granted, it does have this old, 'dusty soapiness' of coriander and a spritzy freshness of citrus peel as well as a basic kind of sourishness, but it still remains atypical for a 'blanche' in being too lemonade-like sweet (though nothing cloying or exaggeratedly childish here). The level of sourness seems okay for a witbier, there are just too many residual sugars at work here; this needs to be more 'rustic' and 'quietly spicy', as it were. Not my beer at all - but then I never really liked witbier in general, instead usually preferring the Reinheitsgebot-governed German Weissbiere. Drinkable alright, but laughable, unpleasantly soapy, too sweet and simply redundant at the same time. That said, I would never have expected Van Steenberge (notably among the last breweries to have a multiple of aliases and only a handful of original beers - dixit a hobby brewer I know who works there) to come up with something really game-changing, as they have chosen the path of conservatism a long time ago. New beer and new recipe, sure, but adding literally nothing to the already hollowed Belgian witbier concept and way too ridiculously soapy to be enjoyable even as a witbier, with the coriander influencing mouthfeel much more than it does flavour, which in this particular case could have been a better option. So not looking forward to the Blond one now.

Pretty clear blond beer, small aery irregular white head, unstable, dissipates very quickly. Aroma: spicy, floral, soft fruity notes, pretty yeasty, bit peppery. MF: soft carbon, medium to light body. Taste: pretty spicy, rather bitter, little fruity, yeast, slightly sourish. Aftertaste: bitter, little metallic, a bit floral, dry finish. Not sure I'd identify this as a witbier in a blind tasting...
