Sweet and smooth porter from Lyon. Ninkasi Noire is a sweet , smooth beer, with aromas of caramel and chocolate. This beer is inspired by an old brown beer, brewed in the 19th century Lyon and known throughout France. At the time, the town had numerous breweries, but they gradually disappeared with the arrival of the industrial era. The use of coffee and caramel malts give it its unique aroma. Assuredly a typical Lyonnais beer.

18/12/2020. Bottle from Beer52, 5.1% abv, as Ninkasi Noire. Pours dark brown with a small frothy off-white to beige head. Aroma of milk chocolate, dark fruit, berries, cocoa, damson, blackberry and plum jam. Medium sweetness, moderate bitterness. Moderate body, texture a bit watery, and quite fizzy. Body and fizz makes it a little less appealing but enjoyable otherwise.

Bottle from a French supermarket - many thanks, Anke! Pours hazy black with a big, tan head (gusher). Aroma of dried fig, prune, liquorice, chocolate powder, toffee, liqueur. Taste has sweet fig, prune, vague red apple, chocolatey malty body with herbal & spicy liquorice underneath, low toasty bitterness. Earthy-peppery hoppy finish, more toast & dried fruit. Medium body, creamy texture, average carbonation. Not spot-on but enjoyable.

T: medium malty base, roasted tones, fresh dark bread crust, bit cocoa, dark fruity, dry on the palate, too much bready roasted tones for me yet not bad, enjoyed.

[33cl bottle from Beer52 at 5.1% ABV.] An opaque, dark brown pour with a thin beige head; earthy aroma; very sweet taste with roasted barley and red berry fruit; then a drier finish with a touch of bitterness and some warmth. A pleasant dark beer - not sure if it's a stout or a black IPA.

33cl bottle; BB Apr 2021. Poured into a thistle shaped glass at home on 19th Feb 2020. Fast fading head to nothing, the body deep mahogany colour. Dark fruits and red wine in the nose, dark fruits and chocolate in the taste. Really enjoyed the aroma and flavours, pity about the no show of a head.
