2009 bottle, thanks to Ken at THE Barley Wine Tasting, August 2012. It pours medium brown, with reddish hues and a thin off-white head. The nose is hoppier than anticipated, pine, varnish, light caramel, toffee apple, brown sugar and orange cream. The taste is varnish, wood polish, raisin, toffee, creaminess, wood, apple, syrupy-sweet tinned fruit and a pretty serious alcohol burn, with some bitterness in the finish. Full body, fine carbonation and sticky mouth-feel. Not too shabby.

2007 Vintage 12.5% abv shared by a friend. Pours a slightly murky solid dark brown color with a decent sized off white head that quickly dissipates to a ring on top. Well it smells like a barleywine. Lots of dark sugar and fruit with a touch of warming alcohol, cherries, prunes and plums mixed with dark drown sugar. The flavor is spot on, lots of caramel and brown sugar coated cherries, raisins, plums, and a hint of earthy spice and warming alcohol. Medium to thick body with a light to moderate level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. Wow that is a mighty fine aged barleywine from a brewery that up until today I hadn’t heard of. Well done!

Draught @ Bakushu Club Popeye, Tokyo as ”Barley Wine of the Legend”. 14,5% version, 2011?. rated on 05.09.2011
Mahogany colour, no head. Aroma has sweet caramel, some oaky notes. Actually rather close to Utopias but less alcohol and more sweetness. Flavour has also some alcohol. It is rather woody with oak and some vanilla‐like cognac notes. Acrid finish, rather weird stuff but still good in some way.

Bottle courtesy of ksurkin pours deep clear gold with off white head. The aroma is pears, apples, wheated malts and some boozy heat at the end of the draw. The taste has a mead like sensation along with sweet malts, apples, pears, floral hops and booze. Pretty interesting barleywine for sure.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Market, Charlottesville, VA. Pours a hazy dark reddish amber color with a thin tan head. Decent head retention around the edges but it eventually fades to nothing and leaves little lacing. Very fruity aroma with notes of berries, plums, green apple and pear, as well as some toffee, sugar notes and a bit of booze. The taste is big, huge malty notes, brown sugar, toffee, pear, apple, berries and some booze. Some faint chocolate sneaks in there eventually. Full bodied. Pretty hot beer and one that could probably benefit from some aging.

Awesome nose and a good beer, I could have just smelt that glass all night.

Bottle. Murky chestnut color, small off white head that disappears quickly leaving no lacing. Aroma of caramel. Taste has alcohol up front, lots of summer fruit, sweet like sangria. Good body. Interesting.

Location: Tap at Legend, 12/27/09
2009 Vintage (15.3% ABV according to the Big Board)
Aroma: Aroma of some fruit, berries, citrus hops
Appearance: Caramel colored beer, white head
Flavor: Big, somewhat sweet flavor, nice bitterness
Palate: Full body, and not nearly as hot as the ABV would suggest
Overall Impression: This was a really good Barleywine, one of the smoothest, nicest drinking Barleywines I've had in a while. I couldn't believe how smooth this was, and how well they hid the 15.3%, it was hardly there at all. Really dangerous beer, that is for sure. I really enjoyed it.
