A firm favourite with the customers who have fond memories of the days when this beer would be “mulled” using a red hot poker, to enhance it’s aroma. It is brewed using pale, crystal and black malts with a little high maltose syrup. The beer’s natural sweetness is balanced using Progress, Fuggle and Golding hops.

A warming aroma with hints of chocolate, fruit and malt gives way to a complex full palate of chocolate, fruit and liquorice. The finish is long and the overall impression is of a superbly crafted, smooth and well-balanced beer, which many will testify is deceptively strong.

Bottled. Near black beer with a strong head. Strong aroma of fruity malt. Rich, sweet flavour of dark fruit and brambles, with a bitter finish providing balance. Very pleasant.

Bottle: Almost as black as a crow in a coalmine, stable, tanned fluffy head; stronger dark-malty and roasted-malty nose, cacao and some ripe fruits with a touch of - almost - tobacco; robust bitter-sweet flavour, light to medium bodied; bitter-sweet finish with dark fruit and hops. A nice, complex and rich ale !
