Staying true to original porter brewing techniques, Telegraph Stock Porter is dark and complex, yet eminently drinkable, revealing a tantalizing combination of coffee, vanilla, and chocolate aromas married to a fruity, refreshing acidity. The name "Stock Porter" was the moniker 19th century pub keepers gave to the more expensive Porter that had been aged in their beer cellars, as opposed to "Mild Porter", which was a less complex, less expensive, and less characterful brew.

Pours black with off white head. Aroma of rotten apple, hints of chocolate. Flavors, light malts, some chocolate, followed by apple notes. Light roast. I could get some elements of what the beer was supposed to be, but clearly did not pick up any hints of barrel or port in this one. Would not mind trying a newer batch. That’s 2 or 2 on Telegraph beers that seem to have been infected.

Bottle from Monument in Concord, CA. Bottled 12/22/2008. Pours dark brown with a large, frothy tan head. Smell is dominated by zinosity, but there is underlying roast malt and perhaps chocolate/coffee. Near medium body with mild carbonation. Flavors of dark malt, chocolate and coffee. And in the finish the zin aspect pretty much takes over. Finishes towards astringent; might be oak. Nice stuff.

June 2008 Bottle. Pours with a large, light brown, creamy head and a black body. Great lacing and head retention. Aroma of dark fruits, coffee, milk chocolate, oak and some vinous spiciness. Taste is lactose, dry coffee grounds, milk chocolate, vinous elements with plums. Lively bubbles and creamy mouthfeel.

Draft at Lucky Baldwin. A deep red beer with a thin tan head. The aroma is sweet with notes of caramel and malt, as well as lighter notes of roasted malt. The flavor is sweet and very malty as well as rather roasted and with strong notes of caramel, and alcohol that tickles the tongue, and somewhere in between it all a light note of chocolate mixes in.

From tap. Pours pitch black with a lacing white head. Dark and roasted malt aroma. Flavour holds a mix of roasted malt and liqourice hops. Quite dark and bitter. Ends solid hoppy, bitter and with a lingering liqourice flavour. Simple yet solid.

Draught at Lucky Baldwins, Pasadena, California. Black, rocky head. perfumy berryish nose at first, then lightly roasty malt chimes in with licorice. Orange and yeast tags along before a salty finish rounds it off. The body is light and the mouthfeel clean. A drish and light individualitic porter with lots of character. I like it!

Bottle from Odeed that he got on a Morro Bay trip; Huge gusher! 1 inch of beer and 7 inches of foam in my tall glass; kept foaming out the bottle top until it was half full. Nose was musty, with light caramel malt; hazy dark brown with a huge, gushing head; flavor has coffee and cocoa, with molasses notes and some red wine and woodiness.
