Ripe, red Louisiana strawberries are harvested at the peak of the season in the early morning chill. The scent of the juicy red Ponchatoula berries fills the air as they’re picked and pressed for Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager. The end result is a light, crisp lager with just a hint of strawberry sweetness.

Bottle at Old Chicago. Pours a hazy earthy gold with a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a combination of sweet strawberry and earthy/musty grains. Flavor starts mild with sweet grains and finish is a combination of musty grains and sweet strawberry.

Bottle at HCC came highly recommended by the bartender. It’s a local favorite and always sells out... I can’t say that I’d buy this again. A little strawberry in the nose, along with malts. Smells ok overall. Taste is fruity and malt, but very sweet and cloying. Overall below average.

So as I was reaching onto a high shelf for some sort of vessel to contain this beverage, I knocked it over. Not only did this result in spilling about a quarter of the bottle, but as I stood it back up it began to foam over. I stuffed the bottle in my mouth to contain the liquid until I grabbed a cup. As the sickly strawberry sugar beer foam filled my mouth, I began to wonder why I was going to such trouble to save this beer.

12oz bottle pours clear deep gold with thin white head. The aroma is strawberry, sweet apple flavored tart candy and apple cider. The taste is similar with strawberry extract, aspartame sugar substitute (disgusting, you people make me sick) and sugary sweet malts.

Pours pale gold into a shaker. Bright white head with medium retention recedes to hug rim leaving scant trailing sheets. Strawberry jam aromas. Crisp with upfront marshmallow turning to a bittersweet strawberry pith middle before the abrupt mild hop finish.

12 oz.bottle courtesy of imtimrhodes. Pours pale straw with a thin white head. The aroma is pale malts, lager yeast, light berries, and faint floral hops. The flavor is malty sweet, a little musty, with a slight bitter finish. The palate is light and fairly carbonated. Overall, a good summer beer, with an interesting twist.

As Ryan says, "This beer is what it is." Don’t like fruit beer? Don’t drink it. But I’m surprised that a beer with such high potential to be vile and undrinkable as Abita Strawberry Harvest Lager is instead so sippable. Very clean, definitely a lager, but Abita actually shows restraint by not smashing you over the head with gobs and gobs of strawberry flavor. Still, as the beer nears its end, the berry flavor becomes a little cloying and artificial, but, as fruit beers go, this bottle makes a decent diversion.

A golden blonde ale with a thin white head. In aroma, horrid butterscotch, strawberry jam, and vomit, off and unpleasant. In mouth, a sweet caramel and chemical strawberry, sponge candy, cloying. Bottled at ROC Empire Brewfest, Feb. 19 2011.
