Cherry saison is concurrent with the best of summer weather. The days are long and warm, and the spring blossoms have gracefully turned to plump drupes. Much in the same way, our Imperial Cherry Saison undergoes subtle but noticable changes while cruising from kettle to bright tank. Like the sun ripening fruit, a pit stop makes this beer better. Cherry Saison is aged with French Oak staves, imparting overtones of spice and balancing the natural sweetness of the cherries. Cherry Saison is the first in this series to incorporate oak aging. Enjoy it as a dessert beer, or tilt it back while sitting under a shady tree on a warm summer afternoon.

Bomber pours opaque sandy – gold with copper hues and short lived white head. The aroma is the expected sweet cherry notes as well as some yeasty spices, grains, hay, a slight herbal note or two and some floral hops. The taste is pretty crisp starting with a brief sweet pulse of sweet cherries and sweet malts. Those notes are run over by a cherry skin like tannin tartness, spicy yeast, a touch of bubble gum and a sense of beat sugar. Mild tartness and cherry extract take this into the finish.

Hazy golden tinted copper body with a thin white fast-dying head. Aroma of cherries, malt, wheat, coriander seed and a bit of sugars - not great. Medium-bodied; Sharp pungent wheat and malt flavours with some cherries, a touch of hay and light sugars noticeable. Aftertaste is mild and slightly acidic and sour. Overall, a pretty bad beer - there haven’t been many of them by Southern Tier, but this was just a miss. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased at Trader Joe’s in Falls Church (Bailey’s Crossroads), Virginia on 22-May-2010 for US$4 sampled at home in Washington on 25-May-2010.

27th December 2008. Hazy gold beer. Not much head. Dry and crisp and with a nice sourish aromatic malt. Just a measured amount of unsweet cherry. Light and refreshing.

Bottle. Clear gold body with a white, fizzy head. Pretty weak aroma of cherries, slighty artificial cherries. The flavor contained a mild cherry flavor, unfortunately an artificial one. Perfumes, spices, sweet, slightly tart, marzipan? Sweet and disappointing.

Bomber. Clear pale gold body with a white, fizzy head, mostly diminishing. Aroma of sour cherry, nail polish remover, alcohol, rubber. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly to moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter and lightly to moderately tart. The finish also leaves a slight astringent taste of lacquer and flavor of alcohol. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. The flavors, combined with the alcohol, don’t work together. Unpleasant.
