Heavy Weizen explores the inner depths of creativity and craftsmanship, taking a style of ale that is delicate and quaffable and shaping it into something exuberant and sturdy.
The foundation of Heavy Weizen begins with prodigious quantities of North American malted barley and wheat. Next, the finest European hops are added to complement this ale’s unique disposition by giving spicy aromas. Its spirit is forged during fermentation where our Bavarian weizen yeast consumes sugars and creates divine flavors reminiscent of bananas and cloves. Then, by aging this ale, we allow the divergent characteristics to blend together, becoming one. To capture Heavy Weizen’s spirit, this wheat ale remains unfiltered to leave some of the yeast in the bottle. Serving this ale with a wedge of lemon is recommended, but optional.
18 plato, 38 IBUs, 2-row pale malt, malted white wheat, hallertau magnum, saaz.

Draft. Poured almost a bronze and reminiscent of a Schneider Weisse. Real good.

Good weizen pour hazy and golden. Aroma of malted wheat, lemon, and fesh cut grass. Flavor is quite full bodied and rich. Lots of banana and there is quite a lingering bitterness. Overall I’m not that impressed, it’s good but not great.

65 cl bottle @ O’Hara’s Freehouse. Rated on 17.04.2010
Rather unusual appearance; after the pour I can see the yeast falling towards the bottom of my glass. Aroma is somewhat sweet banana esthers, yeasty notes, fruits and hints of alcohol. Flavour is sweetish with wheaty notes, fruits, banana esthers and yeast. Finishes with somewhat stinging alcohol. Good still.

22 ounce bottle into weizen glass, no bottle dating but this has been retired for a couple years at least. Pours very hazy golden amber color with a fairly dense 1-2 finger white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing on the glass. Aromas of big banana, lemon, pear, wheat, caramel, honey, clove, bread, orange, pepper, bubblegum, earth, and yeast spices. Pretty nice aromas with good strength and decent balance; the age is definitely apparent. Taste of banana, orange, clove, pear, wheat, biscuit, caramel, lemon, pepper, honey, earth, toffee, and yeast spices. Lingering notes of banana, light fruits, wheat, biscuit, clove, caramel, pepper, and yeast spices on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of flavors; good fruity/spicy flavor balance; zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick and creamy mouthfeel that is good. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a very nice imperial hefeweizen. Nice balance and complexity of flavors; and very smooth to drink for an 8% beer. Very enjoyable offering, despite the noticeable age.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 12/12/10
Aroma: The nose is quite citrusy, with some wheat, banana, and a touch of peach as well
Appearance: It pours a mostly clear golden-orange color with a small white head and light lace
Flavor: Tastes of citrus sweetness, wheaty malts, a little German yeast spice, and a touch of hops
Palate: This one has a medium body, average carbonation, and a fairly long and dry finish to it
Overall Impression: This is one of those "How the heck haven't I rated this one?" beers. Anyway, this is a solid Wheat Ale, but nothing spectacular. I've come to expect a little more then this from Southern Tier, but it's certainly plenty drinkable.

22oz bottle. Cloudy golden color. White head. Wonderful aroma of wheat malt and lots of banana. Nice aroma of earth. Lots of bananas and other fruity esters. Lots of wheat malt, a very nice grain profile. Whole grain liquid bread. Finishes with a yeasty and earthy bitterness. Lots of clove as well. Heavy bodied. Very thick and creamy textured. A bit higher in ABV than most other Wheat Ales. Another nice beer from Southern Tier!! The only down fall is I can taste the alcohol in the finish.

Refrigerated bottle poured into a refrigerated weizen glass. Pours a hazy light orange with medium density white head. Light wheat aroma with good lacing, and extremely high carbonation. Taste is in between a bavarian hefeweizen and american wheat ale.
