Imperial Pelican Ale is a classic Pacific Northwest IPA. We’re not exactly objective, but we consider this beer to be among the top tier of craft brews – and it’s won enough medals to prove it! Imperial Pelican is one of our first core beer styles (originally named “India Pelican Ale”) and we think of it as part of our own heritage in a bottle. Huge Cascade hop aroma, subtle malty sweetness, and a spicy, citrusy flavor; this ale is all that a Northwest Imperial Pale Ale should be.

bottle at Ft Wayne locals tasting - Pours hazy orange and smells of floral and citrus hops. The flavor is intensely hopped and is definitely a west coast style IPA. The hops profile is very nice, but I thought this one was kind of out of balance. It has a medium body and the expected bitter finish.

Pours slightly hazy golden orange with white head. Piney aroma with a little sweetness. Initial flavor is piney hops fololwed by grapefruit and sweet maltiness. Nice bitterness and spiciness. Medium body with lively carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. A very well done IPA.

Throwdown. NIce resiny hops. Good clean bready malts. Balanced finish, but a bit leaning to the hop.

Draft. Amber beer with a nice whitish head. Good grapefruit aroma. Grapefruit and light pine flavor with backing malts (caramel with a bit of roast and chocolate). Grapefruit and complex malts linger. Medium body. Decent bitterness. Nice beer.

Fairly heavy palate. Very full flavored and well balanced with sweet malt and loads of hops. Dark orange color. Citrus, especially grapefruit in the finish.

Draft at the Pelican. Light amber color with a white head. Citrus hop aroma, perhaps with a hint of pine. Lots of resin. Starts with pine, some backing malt. Medium body. Citrus follows, but for me it’s strongly hop. Nice clean bitter finish. Pine seems to last longest.

Large, white head atop a clear amber body. Pleasant, if not somewhat subdued, nose of pine, resin, grapefruit and flowers. The flavor only hints at malt sweetness, and is dominated by bitterness. The taste is full of floral hops, soap, grapefruit. Medium body with a sticky texture. Fizzy carbonation. Long finish that is moderately acidic.

On tap at Pelican Pub and Brewery, Pacific City, OR. Deep gold with thin white head. Lots of hop on aroma. Quite perfumed. Quite harsh hop. Harsh Cascade hop aroma. Bit of grapefruit. Moderate malts to give it some backbone and then strong hop finish that verges on the sharp. Very drying on the palate.
