This premium bitter, good to its name, has an enticing reddish hue. The aroma has vine fruits with a hint of caramel toffee from the aromatic malt and a nod towards the hoppiness to come. Red River has a smooth, full mouthfeel and an initial taste of almonds and some metallic flavour from the hops. There’s a good malt and hop balance and just enough alcohol warmth for the strength. As the taste develops the hoppiness grows with a long lingering bitter aftertaste with hints of pine and spice.

50 cL bottle, courtesy of Papsoe. Pours cloudy dark brown with a small off white head. Aroma is spiced and roasted malty. Flavour is roasted malty and sligh breadish. Bitter, fruity and caramelish. Bitter and fruity finish.

Bottle 50 cl. Courtesy of fonefan. Pours a hazy amber with a huge and lively off-white head - shaving foam style - leaving quite some lacework. Fruity and caramellish nose. Medium body, sweet caramel, fruit and yeast. Hardly any hops. But not too bad really. 261010

Bottle 50cl. @ Chriso’s pre GBBF Shindig ’09.Clear light medium amber color with a small to average, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, white to off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, roasted, caramel, oxidide. Flavor is moderate sweet and light bitter with a average duration. Body is light medium, texture is watery - oily, carbonation is soft. [20090801]

bottled. Hazy deep amber colour, small bige head. Aroma is quite much wooden, mild sourish notes, some slight hops and some mild herbal notes,. Flavour is caramel, some hops, mild grains and grass. Also some rather wooden oaked notes, which is strange. Still quite much that with a big grassy finish.

Cask handpull at The Plough, Byfleet. Pale chestnut, lasting thin ivory head. Nice sweetish earthy ESB. I think I’ve had this before in bottle from the Cask & Glass in Tonbridge. Good malts, good depth, decent hops on the end which are quite earthy.

Light brown. Some fruit in the aroma, with a light malt flavor. Medium body. I thought I was drinking a light stout or porter. Fairly expensive for what it is, but not a bad beer.

Cask at Akkurat, Stockholm. I’ve never enjoyed King & Barnes’s beers, and judging from the two first cask ales tasted from W.J.King I don’t think I’ll like this brewers new beers either. Dark amber. Aroma of grain and apple. Sweet and sulphuric. Clean, rounded mouthfeel. Unclean, sweaty flavour, low hop rate. Surprisingly other beer geeks praised this beer beside me, personally I thought it was off. If I can, I’ll try to re-rate this.

Uneventful but tasty - very much like an english pale ale - slight hops, even some citrus in the background - yeasty - tastes like it was crafted by experienced hands, but lacks anything that makes it stand out in any way.
