For a sour, it's a bit of a let down. But it's still nice to get a rare sour here in Canada. It just isn't tart enough. 2016 advent calendar

Hazy blonde. Thin head. Aroma shows a touch of horsey lambic, some sweet pale plasticy Belgian ale stuff. The ale shows through most, and it seems a bit phenolic and sweet. There isn’t a lot of lambic character, but it lends a bit of balance to what probably wouldn’t be that great a beer.

330mL bottle, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out Belgian saison yeast upfront, followed by a touch of funk, and dry cereal notes. Flavour is along the same lines, with lots of Belgian saison yeast upfront dominating, with a touch of funk, straw and dry cereal malt. I think this is better than the average rating suggests. Very subtle, with the minority of lambic portion accentuating the saison yeast well. Solid.

330ml bottle from 2016 craft beer advent calendar. Pours a hazy gold with a medium, frothy, short lived, white head that laces. Faint, sour aroma of lemon, brett, banana, caramel, wheat malt and wood. Sweet flavour of bready malt, lemon, brett, caramel, wheat and wood with a dry, mildly sour finish. Light to medium body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. I was a little disappointed with this one.

’Versnijbier’ of a blonde ale (probably just Kadet or maybe a custom-brewed variation of it) with their own Oud Beersel lambic. Lots of pressure released upon opening, but no gusher. Very thick, frothy, egg-white head slowly receding to a layer of mousse with good edge retention; initially clear, warm and pure ’old gold’ colour with a lot of lively sparkling, turning equally hazy with a deeper peachy hue upon adding the sediment. Aroma of moldy lemons, fermenting hay, unripe peach, lots of sour green apple, dry earth, gooseberry, grapefruit juice, light banana, dust, straw, barnyard, yellow plum, bread crumbs, white grape peel, old crackers, cucumber, dry sherry, field flowers. Crisp, lively onset, lots and lots of fruitiness, sweetish banana and pear hints surrounded by an unripe stonefruit and green berry tartness, minerally carbonation but ’refined’ enough not to stun the tongue too much, supple mouthfeel. There is a thin line of lemony acidity throughout with a drying effect, but it remains subtle and refreshing rather than outspokenly sour; bready malt sweetishness underneath, bit cereally. Earthy finish with a lot of juicy fruitiness, lingering esters of course but also that drying lambic tartness on top of it, woody tannins noticeable and helping to dry the ending, but juicy malt sweetishness keeps prevailing; an earthy, leafy hop bitterish note provides a soft bitter accent. This ’coupage’ of a Belgian blonde with lambic, celebrating that ten years ago, these guys revived the old Oud Beersel brewery, is a very refreshing beer, crisp and tart, but at the same time still soft and sweetish enough to remain accessible to those who are not familiar with lambic (or modern sour ale). Not a big game changer perhaps, but certainly very enjoyable.
