Notes from July 2009 2.14/5 rDev -45.8% look: 4 - smell: 2.5 - taste: 1.5 - feel: 4 - overall: 1.5 Growler from New Beer. Filled 3(?) weeks ago. Beer in, beer out. Poured into an Ommegang flute/tulip thing. Inch+ of furry egg white head that would make a lovely coat. Chill hazed new bronze, ADD afflicted body. Smell is heavy on the banana & melon. Some vanilla strikes me as out of place. Powdered ginger, anise, & rubber notes. Dusty wheat & yeast. The potpourri is too forward. I'm anticipating something really awkward. Taste is just overly spiced. I can't see this working with any food. Coriander, wheat, & alcohol front load the beer & rolls it into a ditch. The nutmeg just adds bitterness. There's an onion/vegetable skin characteristic that is just so confusing. The fennel(yes, I read the ingredient list) I like actually, it gives it a cool, almost minty feel. The cinnamon & pepper don't pop. I don't sense them. Faint numbing from the chiles once the glass is flat warm. Back end is mostly anise & envelope licking bitterness. Finish is mostly neutral. Add some chocolate malt & you have yourself an ugly Christmas beer. Very intense & tiring overall. Feel wasn't so bad. Beginning was grainy, but the carbonation is pretty close, just barely barely too much sizzle. A bit newspaper-ish there at the end too. I'm a trooper, but this is a chicken marinade if anything. :(

Bottle at the Funky 6. Pours straw gold, semi-hazed with a medium, white head. Dynamic aroma, spicy and floral, with hints of ginger and pepper. Flavor is fairly sweet, with interesting spices, citrus and moderate bitterness. Medium in body with fine to average carbonation. Dries up slightly in the finish, with crisp and lightly resinous hops, and ginger cutting through a good bit. A very nice beer and the unique ingredients work well.

Growler from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very slightly hazy lemon yellow color with a medium head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of bubblegum, coconut and eggnog. Taste is citrus, ginger, coriander, lots of other spices. The heat from the chilies grows as you drink the beer. Medium bodied. Good beer.

Draft at Max’s, Baltimore. Certainly one of the odder concoctions Brooklyn has come up with. Spiced out, herbal aroma. The taste is similar, full of pepper, clove, and all sorts of herbal goodness(?). Pale golden yellow color, thin head. Maybe a hint of Candi sugar in there. Very sweet, slightly medicinal. Overbearing alcohol, lacks subtlety.

Sampled on draft at the Rivertowne Pub this beer poured a bright golden color with a medium sized white head that faded quickly. The aroma was tart, tangy, yeasty and spicy. The flavor was dry, tart and spicy - mostly pepper, clove and ginger with a touch of banana following. There was a sugary middle and a yeasty undertone. The finish was long and dry with pepper and clove dominating. Medium body. Interesting.
