Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

Bottle. Reddish brown color. Lychee, peach, pineapple, red berries and some oily flowery hops in the aroma. Loads of grapefruit, red berries and pineapple in the malty sweet, but also oily earthy hopflaor. Alcoholic. Loads of everything. Overwhelming beer.

Celar red, thick offwhite head. aroma is hoppy, spicyt, stingy. flavor is sweet, hoppy, balanced.

Bottle from River City Cellars on 05/06/2011. Slightly hazy dark amber body with a medium creamy tan head. Sweet fruit, caramel, toffee, and floral hop aroma. Sweet fruit and caramel flavor with floral hops. Medium full body with moderate carbonation. 7/4/7/3/15 3.6 On tap at Capital Ale House - Downtown on 03/02/2009. Clear deep amber body with ruby highlights and a medium creamy off-white head. Sweet caramel and fruit aroma with a bit of alcohol. Sweet caramel flavor with some sugary hints and lots of fruitiness. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation and a somewhat syrupy finish. 7/4/8/3/16 - 3.8

Pour is a dark red with a large tan head. Aroma is excellent with a strong dose of hops followed by some vanilla and oak. Flavor is brown sugar and citrus fruit with some aggressive hops. This is a very well made barley wine with a big hoppy profile.

22 oz bottle. Pours a deep ruby color with a small white head. Aroma is hoppy, malt, citrus, grains. Flavor is seeped in alcohol, with a very surprising crisp hop taste to it. Impressed, but like many of these beers - are difficult to consume when dealing with only one person drinking.

22 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a deep red color with a medium offwhite head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma is big resiny hops, citrus, grain and toffee. Taste is toffee, citrus hops and caramel. Full bodied.

22oz bomber, aged a year in a dark closet. Murky amber brown color. Big liqueur like aroma, very nice. The carbonation had probably smoothed a touch, but the taste is still right on. Rich toffee notes, slightly piny and syrupy. You know this one packs a punch when you drink it, but the alcohol merges well with the other flavors. Great Barleywine, worth a try for enthusiasts.

bottle Pours dark brown with a two finger head that leaves heavy lacing. It has a rich malt aroma with some dark fruit and oak. The flavor has big up front caramel malt sweetness blending into a substantial hops presence. There is a medium to full body and some of that 10 percent abv is apparent but not in a bad way. Good stuff.

Bottle thanks to ilovedarkbeer. Pours with an off-white head and a dark brown body. Aroma of raisins, dark fruit, alcohol. Taste is caramel, raisins, alcohol and brandy with a bit of ash. Syrupy mouthfeel and light bubbles.

Bottle Pours out a nice amber topped with a sand head. Aroma of sweetness O yes caramel along with some fruit. Tast more of the sweetness all over this one. Alittle hops just to round it out. Vert tasty. I keep saying this but can Southern Tier make a bad Beer??? I have not had one yet.
