Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

Bottle @ Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Pours a dark amber color with an off-white head. Sweet malty hoppy caramel flavor. Sweet malty caramel flavor with some hoppy hints. Sweet malty finish with a long bitter aftertaste.

Clear burgundy pour, with a tiny ring of lace - aroma of dark fruits, carmelized brown sugar, chocolate, background herbal hops - a bit of an oily mouthfeel, but a tiny bit thin - burnt grains and a moderate hop flavor up front, followed by notes of black cherry, plums - herbal, tea-like flavors arrive late, coupling with grassy hops and a clean, raw can sugar sweetness - alcohol warmth crops up in the finish, along with lingering cookie/bready malts and carmelized sugar - one of the better high octane beers from this brewery.

Bottled at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Nut brown, almost no head. Aroma of black currant and bubblegum. Sweet and thick with hard mouthfeel. Some syrup and salt mixes with black currant juice. Long piney bitterness. An unusual barley wine.

10th rater. Twist off cap on this 650ml bomber. Poured into a Duvel tulip glass with a very small head. Looks almost brown colored but when viewed against the light one can see this is an extremely dark ruby red color. Almost complete clarity in the light and absolutely no clarity away from the light. Aroma is hop heavy with lightly citrus-ed pine-y gassiness. Aroma is full and heavy with a spiked feel on the nostrils. Light alcohol hints hidden underneath all those hops. There is enough strong caramel maltiness underneath the hops to offset it. A very young Bigfoot-like feel to it. Taste is similarly hop filled with a similar malt flavors adding a good amount of sweetness and heaviness to the flavor but overall not as heavy as the aroma would indicate. An interplay of sweetness from malt and hops throughout. A medium-strong bitterness intersects the sweetness and finishes with a burnt caramel aftertaste. As the beer warms the alcohol becomes more apparent and the sweetness a bit overwhelming. Its a hefty body and slightly under-carbonated, creating for a strong presence on the cheeks. A very nice West Coast barleywine from a nice NYS brewer.
Tasted blind @ Cornboy’s 2nd Annual BW tasting. Don’t know how much stock I put into my own blind tastings but here it goes. Piney hops dominant aroma. Taste starts with pine and ends with slightly empty raisins. 7/3/7/3/15. Pretty close the original rating. Bottle was same batch but about a year old.
