Long ago, British farmhouse brewers made special ales using the first runnings of the mash. These beers, now called barley wine, are brewed in the tradition of days past. At Southern Tier this long awaited brew is placed on the back burner until the start of the new year. Back Burner Barley Wine is a celebration of things to come and things remembered. It’s conceived in three small batches, using voluminous amounts of barley and hops. The process starts early in the morning and ends late into the night. We hope this rare brew reignites your spirit for another trip around the sun.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Starts off with some sweet malts, and follows through with lots of growing warmth. Very dark brown, with a small skin of beige head. While it seems overly sweet, it all works out extremely well in the end. Tasty and satisfying.

22 ounce bottle. Deep garnet color with a small beige head that disappates quickly. Earthy toasted grain nose. Subtle notes of dried fruit, maple syrup and molasses. Bittersweet and grainy upfront. Warming alcohol comes on quickly. Extremely dry and sticky. As it warms, a buttery maltiness comes through adding another level of flavor. Finish remains bitter and dry, with a hint of cocoa.

Draft: Oak and elderberry nose, not strong. Clear chestnut, medium yellow head. Nougat ringed with cherries and elderberries. Finishes oaky. Full body, easy carbonation. Nice transitions. Way too easy drinking for 10.5%. Dangerously good.

Bomber from Wine Warehouse. Pours clear, rubious brown with a small light beige head. Aroma (not strong) of dark fruits, caramel, maple, tobacco. Oh lip smacking... tobacco and leather, fig, cherry, maple, chocolate, licorice. Finishes quite bitter.

This was poured into a chalice.
The appearance was a glossy almost semi-burnt brown color with a glaze of a little white head that quickly dissipated. Barely any lacing.
The smell started off with the normal \"tobacco\"/dried fig/fruitiness coming together. Brown sugar and a light maple syrup combine together underneath.
The taste was moderately sweet and dry definitely bringing back the fruits to lead into a semi-sticky fashion in the aftertaste. Nice on the finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a lower sipping quality about it. Surprisingly enough, I find this one for the ABV to perhaps use a bit more \"beef\" in the body.
Overall, still a good barleywine definitely leaning towards the English sort of the wheelhouse. Think Sucaba not Bigfoot.

12 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 1/5/2016. Pours slightly hazy deep ruby red/brownish color with a 1-2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big caramel, maple, molasses, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, raisin, plum, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, maple/molasses, and light-moderate citrus hop/dark fruit notes; with great strength. Taste of big caramel, maple, molasses, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, raisin, plum, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, floral, grass, and toasted earthiness. Light-medium pine/grassy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, maple, molasses, brown sugar, toasted bread, light chocolate/nuttiness, raisin, plum, grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, lemon zest, orange peel, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, maple/molasses, and light-moderate citrus hop/dark fruit flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light dryness from bitterness as well. Light-medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/bready, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice American barleywine style! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/bready malt, maple/molasses, and light-moderate citrus hop/dark fruit flavors; and very smooth and easy to drink for the big ABV. For being as fresh as this is, it is not overly hoppy or bitter; but still has a nice showcase of hops with great balance against the sweet malts. A very enjoyable offering.

American English-style barley wine, from an older bottle at Delirium Hoppy Loft. Loose, yellowish beige, irregular head over an eventually murky, amberish hazelnut brown beer. Aroma of fresh, lightly moist rye bread, hazelnut paste, cashew nuts, brown rhum, candied figs, cornflakes, milk chocolate, marzipan, cognac, white pepper. Rich candied sweetness, marmelade, hazelnuts with a very subtle sourish edge, very soft carbo, vinous mouthfeel as it should be in a barley wine; the main part consists of deliciously thick caramelly malts, nutty with a chocolatey touch, balanced with a light spicy and leafy hop bitterness and warming, liqueurish alcohol. Very rich and warming BW.
