Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

Location: On tap at Fin's Fish House in Rehoboth, 7/5/09

Aroma: A nice mix of smells here, some caramel is present, along with some earthy/floral hops, a little citrus, and some nice spice
Appearance: Nice looking reddish color, with a nice amount of foam from the tap that was about 1 in by the time it got to my seat at the bar
Flavor: Well balance beer that mixes the floral/earthy hops and the caramel malts to form a great balanced taste
Palate: Pretty nice mouthfeel, and not much burn for a 9% beer, well done
Overall Impression: I liked this one. A really good example of how to make a high ABV red that's well balanced and a nice drink.

bottle - Pours dark amber with an off-white head. It smells of caramel malt and citrus hops. The flavor is a good balance of toasted caramel malt with moderately strong hops with citrus and grass notes. It’s medium to full bodied with the 9% abv buried in there somewhere. Nice brew.

Dark amber with a lasting off-white head, leaving lace. Aroma of caramel, sugar and some herbal, continental hops. Sweet caramel flavour, with grainy notes and a just slightly hoppy finish. Boring and sweet

Bottled. Slightly hazy, red brown color, short head. Aroma of caramel malt, some fruit, hops. Bitter taste, bit sweet. Quite typical american strong ale, nothing special, but pretty ok.

Bottle. Reddish brown color. Red grapes juice in the mushy aroma. Initial red grapes juice followed by a firm oily, earthy flowery hopbitterness. Notes of leather and plastic and alcohol. Not unpleasant, but there are some odd flavors.

Bottle, 9%. Weak caramelly aroma. Clear red amber colour. Very small white head. The flavour is quite caramelly, has some grassy hops, slightly biting. The aftertaste even has some caramel along with a good grassy hoppiness.

Bottled. The kast bottle of long day ... Clear deep red color, mostly vanishing head. Ryesih, barley, sugary nose. Ryeish malty, a bit sweet flavor (par to aroma): rye, caramel malts, toffee and late bitterness. Not bad beer, but not the worth of 18 euros I paid.
