Inspiration can sometimes be found in the strangest of places. This eccentric brew started with a single flower from a hop named Hallertau. The delicate and spicy aroma present in the flower has been responsible for generations of great beers. Hallertau hops are to a brewer what an old tractor is to a farmer: reliable. Big Red expresses the nobility of Hallertau by placing it at the forefront of this Imperial Ale. Pour it into a snifter. A swirl allows the spicy aromas to come forward as a taste to the lips reveals the complex balance between sweet malts and the bitterness of hops. Big Red’s ability to please is as dependable as your grandpa’s old tractor. Please consume wisely.

Bottle: Pours a deep rusty color with a large beige head and nice lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, citrus, and little bits of spice. I liked the rich, malty body with hints of rye and caramel. Even a hint of breadiness. Light in the hop character, but still tasty. Thank you Goldtwins.

Amber color. Some nice hop aroma. Good malt taste, even if the body has a medium strength, with a lot of light caramel and good hops; and of course a strong bitterness. A good American interpretation.

(Bottle 65 cl) Courtesy of moejuck. Clear, amber golden with an off-white head. Fresh and fruity, somewhat citrusy aroma. Quite full-bodied with sweetish caramel and a very spicy edge. The finish is hoppy. 230407

Poured a transparent, fizzy looking copper with a clumpy white head. Smells of floral hops with a touch of clove. Taste is very nice and unique, malty, spicy, citrus, etc. Mouthfeel is not very heavy, which is nice, and hides the alcohol well. This a very unique beer, I love the style.

Thanks to jah noth for the bottle. Hazy orange body, thick puffy off-white head. Bready, caramely aroma with requisite citrusy, piney hops. Smells like a sugared grapefruit. The body is characterized by potent grapefruit rind, soapy and earthy hops, and pine, backed by sweet toasty malts. Bitter finish with a punch of alcohol, a bit too much for this beer. Creamy palate. This is OK, not one of my standout American strong ales.

Pour is a deep red with a smallish white head. Aroma is a bit off. Some hops show up with a wee bit of caramel malt. Flavor is much better. Strong earthy hops with a bit of yeast, barnyard and cherry wood. Alcohol is there but nothing to take away from the flavor. Quite good.
