Old Tom is almost as old as the brewery itself. Dubbed ‘The original craft beer’ this dangerously drinkable legend was born in 1899, when Tom, the old brewery cat, was sketched into immortality by the head brewer. Rich and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit.

Cask at GBBF ’13, 15/08/13. Dark mahogony brown with a thin light tan head. Nose is toffee, dark fruit, bready malts, sugars. Taste comprises prunes, marzipan, dates, toffee, fruit cake, light booze. Medium bodied with bite, fine cabonation, lightly warming alcohol in the finale. Good stuff, much better than my memories of the bottled version.

Half pint @Castle Hotel, Manchester, 04.Jul.2012. Mahogany, almost black body. No head. Gingerbread is what first comes into mind, then cigars, pinetrees and liquorice. It’s almost like Christmas! And, wow!, the taste, also so complex: sweet anise, coffee, pepper, ginger, coal, crowberries, coal, smoke and some vinegar... Wow! Very interesting!

Gravity cask at the Wandsworth Halloween BF 2011. Pours dark brown-ruby with a small, bubbly white head. Dark, ripe fruit, bit of toffee. Very sweet flavor, toast, toffee, caramel, sweet leather, prunes. Full bodied with fine carbonation. Mild warming finish, lots of toasty sugar, caramel and toffee, some leather and ripe fruits, mild booze, a bit of brown sugar. Very damn solid ale here.

Cask, 8.5%. Sweet and vinous flavour. Sugary and peppery. Not really boozy, but getting there, with a slightly rough bitterness to add to the alcoholic note. Almost clear dark brown colour. Good stable light brown head. The finish gets more and more warming the more I drink. I am a bit undecided about this one, but it is not too bad.

Cask at NWAF 2009. A brown beer with no head. The aroma has notes of malt and alcohol. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt and alcohol. Too alcoholic for me - and it lacks complexity.
