A malty multiple-winner of CAMRA’s Champion Premium Beer of Britain, Batemans much loved XXXB is what you’d call an English tawny beer. Just like the first batch crafted in 1978, it’s brewed with four malts and three varieties of hops, for a deliciously spicy, fruity and biscuity flavour.

Cask at Charlies. Chestnut reddish. Cream, roasted, malt, walk in the woods. Fluffy light and soft, then a decent bitterness, and then creamy. There are rules for beer - and the first rule is: "if there is cask available then yes". Wait, maybe that was the second rule, with the first "if nitro is available then yes". I am confused and need to read the rule book again. But anyway, this is good.

Cask at Moon Under Water, Wolverhampton. Pours bitter brown with minimal off-white head. Aroma is somewhat faint, but there are traces of malts and nuts. In the mouth it is slightly sweet with a creamy texture. Malts to the fore, along with toffee, marmalade and herbs. Finish is somewhat fruity. This is OK – nothing to write home about.

Amber coloured with small beige/gold head. Aroma is very sweet, creme brulee, malt, bit of coffee, caramel. Taste is equally sweet and sugarry. In fact pretty much the same as the smell. In spite of myself, I quite liked it, but it was definitely nothing that special and got a bit sickly the second time round.
