A malty multiple-winner of CAMRA’s Champion Premium Beer of Britain, Batemans much loved XXXB is what you’d call an English tawny beer. Just like the first batch crafted in 1978, it’s brewed with four malts and three varieties of hops, for a deliciously spicy, fruity and biscuity flavour.

Cask @ Edward Wylie. Amber colour, off-white head. Aroma is caramel malts, bit fruity. Flavour is caramel malts, toffee, and slight hops. Bland.

Cask@GBBF2010. Amber colour with small off-white head. Aroma and flavour is quite much those of a typical bitter with just some slightly more bitterness added.

Cask, Belvedere, Liverpool. Dark copper colour with no real head to speak of. Rather thin mouthfeel. Caramel malty aroma and flavour with minimal hop and just not enough happening in any department. Disappointingly dull.

[Cask at The Castle, Castleton] Amber-brown with moderate off-white head. Fruity, dusty bitterness, but a watery mouthfeel. Pretty forgettable.

Cask-conditioned at the Shakespeare, Bristol 10/02/09. Amber coloured with a frothy white head. Yeast aroma with some earthy malt and hints of hedgerow fruit. Flavour had some sweetness, chewy malt and a long bitter finish. A good pint.

No head. Brown body. Faint wooden nutty aroma. Dry-sweetish wooden caramelly taste with earthy nutty notes. Soft, mild mouthfeel. Lightish body. Dry roasty earthy caramel aftertaste with wooden notes. Long aftertaste. Very nice, and very drinkable. (0.25l cask, Gunmaker’s, Clerkenwell, London.)

Cask [gravity] at EBF 2008, Copenhagen, Denmark. Clear medium amber color with a small, fizzy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate malty, toasted, roasted, moderate hoppy. Flavor is moderate sweet and light to moderate bitter with a average to long duration. Bitterness is malt bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily to watery, carbonation is soft to flat. 120908

Cask at EBF 2008, on Saturday September 13Small white head. Clear copper color. Faint butterscotch scent, also caramel. Sweet, caramel, bitter taste. Sweet aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel, medium bitterness.
