Baltus, a hybrid style, is a top-fermented beer made with English floor malts, malted wheat and noble hops. A classic European yeast strain with a subtle yet discernable estery profile is employed. A warmer fermentation, followed by a period of cold conditioning serves to develop and refine this complex beer.

sample at DLD - Pours amber with a moderate head. It smells of sweet malts and a bit of dark fruit. The flavor was both sweet and surprisingly sour. Medium bodied and lively, this one was... interesting.

Bottle...dark caramel color with some redness...the alcohol scent is blanketed by some syrupy malts...minimal foam...visible sediment floats in my glass...very smooth mouth feel...malty body a tease of brown sugars with a muddled citrus finish

Bottle from Cornboy; Thanks; Nose of spices, bananas, and sweet caramel; rust colored with a small beige head; flavor of brown sugar, caramel malt, spices, fig newtons, and some alcohol in the medium body, the alcohol lasting to the finish.

12 oz bottle, poured a dark caramel color with cloudy body. Creamy textured head, color was tan/creamy. Taste is rich and sweet. We bought this ale after having an enjoyable ’tour’ of the brewery with the highlight being the owner/brewer Tom chatting about items we asked about and unique features of Heavyweight.

2004 bottle. Ruddy brown pour, darker, muted greyish-tan clay tones with a fizzy beige head, mostly disipating. Mostly clear body, with a touch of sediment at the bottom. Aroma of alcohol, dark candi sugar, some dusty/musty yeast and straw. Notes of raisins and toffee are light but also discernable. Flavor begins with a lightly sour yeast mixed with candi sugar, raisins, wheat and light hops. The body is a bit thin overall, or thinner than I would like, anyways. Light alcohol notes on the palate, dark fruit notes and a slightly sharp/sour finish of yeast, alcohol and sugar. Fizzy, bubbly carbonation does not die off very quickly.

This was a really interesting beer though one that I found varied significantly in the several batches that I tried. +++Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a cloudy dark brown with almost no head. The aroma was strong roasted malt and chocolate. The flavor was sour apple and roasted malt with a fruity sourness on the finish. The texture was noticeably flat. A very interesting brew.

Deep brown, clear, no head and little carbonation. Malty spicy aroma. Clean, light, sweetly fruity flavor. Maybe a bad bottle and a re-rate is needed, but for now.... Not bad, but not outstanding either.

Dark amber colour with predominant ruby highlights and a thin soapy tan head. Pleasant aroma of sweet pit fruit, raisins and caramel with the complexity of malt and other fruits. Heavy-bodied; Carbonated mouthful; Sweet inital taste, definately malty with the extra fruityness. Aftertaste bittered from the malt and left sweetened from the fruit and sugars. Overall, a good beer, nice and carbonated. I bought this twelve ounce bottle at Chevy Chase Wine & Liqours in Washington, D.C.

Medium brown colour; some woody, caramelly malt, slight band-aid. Malty, some hard candy, caramel. Very muddled flavours and overall lack of focus.

This is a quality offering. Dark amber color, with a peppery aroma. This has just enough malt presence to satisfy the malt lover, and it has a combination of sweetness and spice that balances nicely. It is kind of like Victory V10 without the tartness, though not quite as complex.
