Our all-malt amber bitter was first brewed in 1828 to satisfy thirsty Mancunians grafting in the workshop of the world. It soon became our most popular beer, and it's stayed that way. We make it using ale and crystal malt, and Golding hops, for a satisfying flavour and citrus aftertaste that's rewarded Mancunian graft for generations.

2/6/2022. Cask at the 35th Colchester Real Ale & Cider Festival. Pours clear dark gold with a small bubbly white head. Aroma of citrus, malt, straw, slight mucky edge. Medium sweetness, light to moderate bitterness. Moderate body, slightly watery, soft carbonation.

Cask at the Euston Tap, London on 30th December 2019. Copper with shallow foam and full lacing. Malty aroma. Nutty and malty in-mouth with a fruity kick and finish of tangy berry fruits. A smooth texture and light body.

Cask at Waterloo Tap. Sweet caramel and malt aroma. Yeasty. Copper-brown. Frothy white head. Sweet with an umami edge. Sugary malts. Gets veggy into the finish. Light-medium bodied. Slick if thin. Soft carbonation. Long slightly astringent finish. Hmm I guess it's a bit different for a bitter but not sure why people on Twitter were making a fuss a out it being available in London. Not excited at all.

Cask at Waterloo Tap. Malty caramel nose, rich malt, light herbal hops. Copper-brown, clear, with a thick head. Sweet caramel flavor with tobacco, chocolate, light orange notes and spicy hops. Thin and light. Good bitter.

Cask, half pint. Tasted on the 21/04/2019 at Manchester Airport, Manchester (England). Last one of the trip. Amber colour with a medium white head. Good retention. Aroma is floral and biscuit malts. Taste is the same, leading to a slightly bitter finish. Easy to drink. Full bodied. See you Manchester! Next one please!

Keg at Haydock Park Racecourse. Clear golden body with a thick, creamy head. Low carbonation. Excellent lacing. Aroma of toffee and lightly roasted malts. Flavour of grain, earth and grass. Light bitterness. Medium body with a creamy texture. Weak fizz. Much nicer than I was expecting.

Cask at the Grouse Inn, Carrog, Denbighshire. Amber with a thick white head. Pleasant caramel flavour with some berries behind. After a tough day’s hillwalking my thirst had already been quenched by J W Lees MPA. This one, light though it was, helped assuage my hunger.

Cask at various Lees pubs around Manchester. Bitter with a lovely head, smooth to an extent but has a generally healthy character for its style. Had the keg version of this for the first time in 2018, pretty similar in taste, crisper, and 1% lower, although you can't tell!!!!

Cask @ National Winter Ales Festival 2009. An amber beer with a lazing beige head. The aroma has notes of malt, caramel, and honey. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, honey, and caramel, leading to a dry, bitter finish where also the honey lingers. The body is no wonder light.
